When I grow up I want to be a wealthy and famous person, “Well if I want to be rich and famous, I would have to get a lot of cash first.” That seemed like a good goal to write about. Then a few seconds later, I thought to myself, “If I want to get lots of money, first I should own a company or become a very good stock market trade.” I was about to start writing about that topic when I realized once again that I needed to get into a good college to own a company. So I wrote about that for a couple of paragraphs, when I finally realized that I would need to finish and do well in high-school in order to get into a good college, in order to get own a company, which will lead into lots of cash, and finally I will become wealthy and famous. So here is my goal.

My ambition is to complete high-school and get into an excellent college, and eventually become a successful business owner. I plan to take on this goal step-by-step or day-by-day, what I anticipate by this is I will not think of this as one goal, but multiple goals throughout all four years that I have at Pioneer. The way that I think about it is that every single day in high school is part of my goal, and each day that I complete is one step towards it. I would like to do this to make myself glad, make my parents honored, and help support them when they get too old to work. I plan on keeping my GPA pretty high, although not perfect. I don’t think this would be too complicated to do, however I know it won’t be easy. I am pretty sure almost all of the kids at Pioneer right now also have this as a goal, but I have chosen to write about it.

The first thing I would have to do in order to accomplish this goal is to work hard academically and study at home every night. This would be a little tough for me because I have a short attention span. The second thing I would have to do is to pay attention in class. I would need to listen carefully and not zone-out like I did in middle school. Tests and quizzes are also important for me because they count more towards my grade than in middle school so I would need to focus on them more. Also, I would need to prepare for midterms and finals, something I did not do in middle school.

There are many people supporting me on my goal. The first group of people that supports me is my family. They always support me even if I do bad in school. They are always there for me and encourage me to do the best that I can. The next group of people that support me are my friends. The people I sit next to in class also help me towards my goal because I can ask them questions when I need to because I do not understand something that we are currently doing. I share the same goal as them and I find it easier to work on a goal similar others work on too. The final group of people that help me towards my goal are my teachers. Well, I can’t technically pass high-school without them so I guess they also help too.

My current goal is to finish high school and get into a good college. I am working towards it right now as a write this paper. I know I need to work diligently and study hard to pass classes with a high GPA, and I also need to pay attention in class and be an active student. I have lots of support, my friends and peers for sharing the same goal as me, my parents and my siblings for helping me when I need it and encouraging me to always do my finest, and my teachers for teaching me things that I will need to know later on in my life in order to get a job. I am excited and ready to finish high-school!

We take medicines because we fear death, and we work hard because we fear failure. However, fear is something that kills our interests, passions and courage.

When I was in school, I vividly remember when my class teacher selected me from the class for an inter-class speech competition, I worked hard preparing and rehearsing it in front of the mirror. The topic was simple and I thought I could speak on it for hours. Nevertheless, when the time finally came to speak on the stage, I got perplexed seeing hundreds of students around. My hands got frozen yet my body temperature rose. My legs started trembling and my throat dried up. I felt as if I was suffocating and I ran away crying from the stage. I was scared of facing people and thought about what they will say after the incident.

Fear exists in human mind in different forms. When I was a kid, I thought my father was the most powerful person and I was scared of him. Perhaps some people are scared of spiders, ghosts or height, while others are scared of losing someone. Fear limits ourselves to our comfort zone and cuts our wings to fly higher and dream bigger.

I always wanted to challenge myself. My class teacher always told me that the best way to overcome any problem is to face it and deal with it. I believe in patience and perseverance. Therefore, I promised myself that I would grasp as much opportunities I could get.

During high school, all I did was explored myself to the fullest. I dared to come out of my comfort zone and got the ability to do things I had never imagined doing. I joined student club called The Maths Club, and I as program coordinator designed and executed the first ever National Competition on college. I was learning practical skills like team building, networking and so on and I was no longer afraid to dream big. I started working as a volunteer teacher for underprivileged children in one of the college’s extended programs. Working as a teacher in the morning and a student during the daytime helped me develop different perspectives in life. I started to open up and develop confidence and courage to express myself.

After high school, I joined a few Not-For-Profits and I got the opportunity to organize events, deliver sessions and also lead a team of 15-20 people working for the same vision. Little did I know that the kid who feared his father was doing awareness sessions for people with his father-like ages.

Normal fear is good but the excess fear is injurious to the growth of a person. It is the factor that stops most people from doing what they want. Overcoming fear is never a bed of roses but all we need is patience and persistence. Once the person gets out of the comfort zone, s/he is simply unstoppable. I have a simple goal in life: to be happy and learn something new everyday. I am not afraid of accepting new challenges that I feel are worthy and above all I have developed courage over fear.

Introduction

As leaders, we tend to punish errors versus rewarding risk-taking. Our standard of learning is focused on content versus skill. Therefore, mistakes require investing additional time and defining success as limiting the time of a person’s failure. Understanding one’s values contributes to overcoming mistakes. I learned at an early age that beliefs and values are an essential part in how we process and overcome challenges. Our ethics help us manage our relationships, clarify what our values are and guide our decision-making.

A successful leader takes each mistake as a learning experience. Marsh (2013) believes that our values are essential in shaping a successful leader. Through my experiences, I have learned that accepting mistakes builds integrity, character and significant influence on behavior. Transitioning from an individual contributor role into a leadership role taught me the importance mistakes have on the development of competencies and skills needed to lead and empower people.

Situation

When I transitioned from an individual contributor role to a management role, I learned very fast the importance of knowing your people’s strengths to achieve organizational goals. Have been recognized as a top performer and working toward a career progression for three years, I was promoted to a manager role. The role offered me the opportunity to manage six business developers in selling educational services to current and prospective clients. I was responsible to meet hefty sales quota where each representative needed to meet his or her goal for me to meet mine. Being a goal-oriented individual, I started focusing on meeting goals by taking on the lead. I used a micromanaging leadership style by doing things myself versus delegating accordingly to motivate and allow learning to occur.

The result of the Mistake

The decision to use a micromanaging approach and still operate as an individual contributor by taking control of the situation led me to lose sight of the importance of developing my team. As a result, my top performers quit and my non-performers di not improve causing me to be on a performance improvement plan. This was so hard to digest because being always recognized as top performers I never had to deal with a failure result. I felt embarrassed, disappointed and scared that after many years I was going to lose my job.

Reflection and Impact

The setbacks and the performance plan made me feel shame, incompetent and a failure. This experience was the turning point that allowed me to process and learn from failures by recognizing and admitting mistakes. It was the first time that I started investing in reading leadership books and reaching out to colleagues and supervisor for guidance. I started using reflection as a guide to, facilitate and navigate through my decision-making process.

It was there that I started using questionnaires as tools to get information. (Zohrabi, 2013) Stated that questionnaire offer open/closed questions or a mixture of both help gather valuable information. While reading Maxwell (2016) five steps reflective approach on addressing mistakes hat I used this approach many years ago as I was finding myself by reviewing what just happened, reflected on my actions and the impact it had on my employee’s, and the bottom line of the organization. I started investing in professional development for myself to recover, rearrange and recharge to ensure I would continue in my career.

Final Outcome

Leadership is about role modeling what success looks like. Positive leaders or mentors execute positive behaviors when they demonstrate that trust can be attained by dependability, building a connection with people and show confidence (Blanchard, 2013). During that probation period, I work very closely with my supervisor to set smart personal goals and spend time with each of my employees to recognize their strength and challenges to better assess and support. I invested in personal development related to learning strategies to become effective as a leader.

After the three months probation my team was back on track, and after that year 50 % of my employees were promoted or given recognition. Placed in situations where you can make mistakes and seek guidance can be a benefit for a person development. Finding the courage to admit when you need help or a change is essential in understanding self-identity and future growth.

Who Helped

This experience helped me recognized that failure can be positive if the lesson is learned. I was fortunate that my supervisor was a good coach because she shared her wisdom, knowledge, and experiences with me. She taught me the importance of delegation and finding the value in each of my employees. She was the first person that changed my perceptions on how to give and receive constructive feedback. Through that process, she shared the importance of discovery in understanding each side before making a decision.

As a result, she trained me that a leader is a mentor or a coach, not a manager and should not take power for granted, but continue working on the qualities required to always strive for better. She was the first person that encouraged me to reflect every day. Personal and professional reflective practices lead to continuous growth. Paul Ramsden states, “ The ultimate guardians of excellence are not external forces but internal professional responsibilities (Ramsdun, 1992, p. 221)

Lesson Learned

This experience taught me that owning a positive frame of mind helps achieve better results when confronted with difficult situations. I have learned how to stayed calmed in difficult situations, be reflective and march on forward despite the challenges. This event was full of examples of what reflective leadership is all about. As a leader, it is important to show empathy and compassion. Leaders need to attain skills and competencies to build confidence and motivation. Becoming a great leader is about improving and modeling behavior on a consistent basis to develop strategies to recognize and value differences. Leadership is a framework through forces that bring forth positive change such as moral purpose, relationship building, coherence making and understanding change (Fullan, 2003).

Conclusion

Leadership is about reflecting, accepting change and adapting to new situations. I try to embrace a new challenge every day because a prosperous educational experience involves continuity and interaction between the learner and what is learned. Accepting and adapting teaches us to become reflective leaders. Reflective leadership encourages development and is “... known to be of benefit in experiential learning, and for the development of critical thinking skills, which facilitate the integration between theory and practice” (Wain, 2017, p.662).

Every single child will be properly equipped to utilize their intelligence in the most effective and rewarding ways. This means more smart people, more smart people means more innovations and discoveries, which means more people have been working on solving major problems. While advancing the technology works in parallel to execute the solutions from a medical perspective. A newfound comprehensive understanding of the human genome now allows us to quickly eradicate diseases as well as ensure that newborn humans are born with optimal health. Evolution is compounding at a 10 X multiple, 10 years is like 100, 100 years is like a thousand and so on. All current 3rd world countries will be living comfortably and poverty will no longer exist. Everything I just said is if everything goes right but knowing people we are bound to everything wrong as well.

Earth could be an absolute wasteland with raging fires everywhere, radiation contamination, oceans dried out, life on earth is on the brink of existence or we could be at war with ourselves again except humans are fighting people from different planets that we have inhabited, and the education system is incomplete freefall or just does not exist at all. AI could have wiped out the earth because it has come to realize that there are too many people on this planet and decides to hack Nuclear weapons and make earth inhabitable for thousands of years due to the fact of nuclear fallout and winter that would kill everything on the ground.

In conclusion, the future is very uncertain. We cannot predict anything, it can go all of 2 ways. The 1st one being where life is thriving, no racism, poverty, the gap between the rich and the poor does not exist as much or none or we would be at war for 3rd, 4th, 5th who knows how many times we could be at war if everything goes wrong. But, we don’t know that it is still a blank piece of paper.

Internet is the most widely used source for exchange information all over the globe. It also provides a platform in which we can express our views and talk to likeminded individuals. Moreover, it is affordable to most of the people of the world. It is gaining popularity at an amazing rate. Internet censorship controls and limits the data available on the internet. We may think internet is free and public space for free expression but it is restricted by censorship. Censorship of the internet is very a complex one as it can work in some cases but in others, mostly it is harmful to the society. I.e. it can protect from child pornography but it can also suppress ideas, information and communication. The Censorship is controlled by the Government. The Government may abuse this right and delete and restrict free speech. Moreover, they may silence who are threat to them. I strongly believe that censorship is against freedom of speech and world would be better off without it. However, there are some issues which really need restrictions. All my points are explained in the following paragraphs.

Text message has become tool for people and organization to share opinions that means Verizon has control over such powerful tool. After this incident was published in news and articles, Verizon was subject of criticism. Even after exposure from media, they decided not to change decision and enjoys restriction over freedom of speech. Another issue worth mentioning was when NSI (Network solution Inc.) , popular domain name registrars and gatekeepers, suspended and removed website of Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders. Because NSI thought that they are going to publish controversial material against Islam. Although only contain available on website was a picture of Koran, which later was removed along with website when NSI received complaint that the content violate terms. All this incidents proves that it is hard to express opinions and thoughts with so many restrictions, and censorship is against freedom of speech.

Censorship has evolved through time and took many forms. When first television was invented restrictions were too strict for example certain body parts of female and male should be exposed too much. Though over time it became less strict and some violence and female with short clothes were allowed. According to John Palfrey, internet has gone through three stage and passing from fourth stages right now. First stage was open space, during 1960 to 2000 internet free of any censorship and states didn’t decided to put any restriction. As internet was considered as a separate space. But during 2000 to 2005, state decided to pay attention for regulation of internet activity and started to manage and block content in different ways. Afterwards, things became escalated from blocking or restricting to controlling. States started to control and monitored people using licensing and identity requirements to go online. China is infamous for censorship. OpenNet Initiative (ONI) a multidisciplinary team at the University of Toronto, and Cambridge, Harvard, and Oxford universities. ONI sent team to 41 countries, they travel to various countries and tried to access 1000 websites related to human rights, activism and pornography. Result was concerning as in China most of these websites were filtered. Another issue ONI noted that there was no filtration before election in Kyrgyzstan but when election was near websites of opposition newspaper were regularly taken down. Which proves that censorship is use to manipulate people thoughts. How does citizen of china affected by censorship explained in following paragraphs with statistical data.

There has been debate that internet should be completely censored by the Government like China. There is specific government which is assigned just to filtered and block websites which Government think people should not know. In China between 2000 and 2007 80% urban citizen believed that Internet should control by the Government, this rate increase by 5% in 2007. Which shows that most of citizens of China are comfortable with idea that their Internet is censor by the Government. However, in my opinion they are victims of networked authoritarianism, a term described by Mackinnon. It means in a networked authoritarian state (China and several former Soviet republics) Government controls all the Internet activity and media. In this countries, Government monitored conversations and when sometimes someone use social media to call out for injustice, Government address that problems and may change some of policies. In a sense citizens feels they are being heard and thinks Internet or mobiles access are protecting their freedom of speech. But when someone protest against system, they are jailed or much worse. Everything controls by the ruling party and citizens are being manipulated by censorship. In case of china, people who supports Internet restriction may not be aware of Internet censorship. They might believe they have full access of internet and own decision. In a way they are completely isolated from rest of the world not knowing that Government has manipulated their perception. This examples are dark side of censorship, which can affect whole world. For example, ruler of networked authoritarian states has ideology of controlling whole world. Nobody would stop them as they are control of everything. This can cause another world war with nuclear weapons and basically end of human kind. My suggestion is people should have their opinions without any censorship would create peaceful world.

Some people argue that internet has played significant role in crime rate of nations. They believed young people who plays video games and watch violence on TV are prone to violence. But in my opinion it does not affect individuals. To prove my point, according to paper by Erwin Bramana Karnadi, there is no casual relationship between censorship and crime rate of nation. It is very difficult to identified which contain is obscene as some information are quite useful for young people but due to Government restriction over internet it is hard to acquire. For example, Twitter policies regarding sexual material caused to remove post related to condom, which is very useful for young people.

However, there are some issues which are need to restricted, beause they have deep impact on society. For example, child pornography. The abuse of children for pornographic purposes is a serious victim logical, criminological and sociological problem of today. The U.S. Supreme Court harms a child in both creation of image and circulation of image. This is the very issue requiring attention. Internet Censorship protects everyone to stop watching any type of child sexual assault.

Overall, freedom of expression is basic human right, and as example provided in above paragraphs explained that censorship violates human right. I believe that everyone should be able to access internet without any restriction we should not let the Government dictate us. Although there are some serious issues which can not be overlooked and censorship help in those issue at some extent. Nevertheless, disadvantages of censorship outweigh benefits of censorship.

We can also question government action or confirm it by showing support.

Americans tell ourselves that we should learn about our history and celebrate our accomplishments through family athersings and holidays. Americans believe that all citizens should be patriotic. At all national sporting events, the audience sings the national anthem before the game commences. In the morning everyday at school, we stand up out of our desks to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. There are also national holidays that both students and adults receive breaks for such as Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Memorial Day. For both Independence Day and Memorial Day, Americans display their patriotism by hanging their flags outside their doors, and marching in parades down their community streets. On Thanksgiving, families gather together, and are able to watch “America’s Team,” the Dallas Cowboys, on National TV. Patriotism is an example of innate sociocentrism because we as a community, believe that America is the best country on Earth. We believe that we always win wars, solve world conflict, and is the best place to live. Because of these qualities, people celebrate our nation.

As Americans we tell ourselves that that everybody accepts each other for who they are, so we can’t get in trouble for expressing ourselves through acts and clothing. American's believe that people can express who they truly are. Everyday, more and more rights are being passed for the LGBT community. In fact 32 states have legalized gay marriage. In other countries around the world, being and LGBT might be reason to have you killed. Specifically, homosexuality is illegal in 79 countries, mostly in Africa and Asia. You can express yourself in a variety of ways in America including how you dress and how you act. In some Middle East countries, there are bans on showing skin, long hair, crossdressing, and makeup. Integrity may sound firm and kind of obscure, yet there are aspects to it that are so critical to your Prosperity that it bears calling attention to – over and again. Integrity represents the deciding moment of your career which makes it well worth paying attention to. Integrity is doing the right thing and making the best decision at the opportune time for an appropriate reason. The best way to learn a word or quality is to look at its opposite – Hypocrisy is the best word I found for Integrity’s opposite. To me, Integrity is the hallmark of a person who demonstrates sound moral and ethical principles at work. Integrity is the foundation on which coworkers build connections, trust, and effective interpersonal relationships. They have a strong moral compass. It takes courage to do the right thing whatever the consequences. Integrity is a valuable quality in everyone, but it’s vital in leaders. Your honesty and integrity will engender trust in others. Qualities that form the foundation of all other human qualities include honesty, integrity, courage, self-awareness, and wholeheartedness. However, Honesty & Integrity can sometimes get you into trouble. For example, if you forgot to do something at your job and were honest about it, you could get fired, which could lead to financial trouble (if you’re unlucky.) On the other hand, if you lie about it and don’t get caught, you will most likely keep your job and maybe get a promotion. But Without Integrity, You Cannot Proceed in Career so you Need to Build Integrity, There are basically 3 steps Toward Building an Integrity In your Life, The First one is Truthfulness (Which has been discussed above).

The 2nd Step Is to Show compassion and sympathy/empathy towards others. You cannot live a life of integrity without being mindful of and concerned for others. A lack of compassion or sympathy for others can often result in poor judgment, acts of selfishness, and ultimately a damaged relationship with someone you care about. The 3rd step is to create a personal mission statement for your life. A good way to ensure that you’re living a life of integrity is to lay out a roadmap for yourself. Assess where you are now in life and consider where you want to be in the future in terms of your personal integrity and moral character. Integrity is a quality every man worth his salt aspires to. It encompasses many of the best and most admirable traits in a man: honesty, uprightness, trustworthiness, fairness, loyalty, and the courage to keep one’s word and one’s promises, regardless of the consequences. But It is not always wise, to be honest, and Integral. Straight trees are cut first.

A person who is straight forward, Full of Integrity and honesty is criticized somewhere in his life. I am not saying that we should lie all the time but lying at times does not make a big difference. Lying for a good purpose is not a bad thing. Lying without hurting someone can be excused. But You Cannot Just Leave Integrity Behind and Be Successful. From research, Dan Ariely has found that committing a dishonest act in one area of your life not only leads to more dishonesty in that one area, but ends up corrupting other areas of your life as well. “A single act of dishonesty,” he argues, “can change a person’s behavior from that point onward.” So Honesty and Being True in every aspect of Life is the Key to Successful Career.

This paper is going to discuss about internal controls in business, the inappropriate cash procedures, and the inappropriate inventory procedures and conclude with recommendations. The aim of internal controls is to create an environment where, mistakes get low chances of occurring and dishonesty cases are easily caught. Although some of the internal control principles seem plain old common sense, those who have ignored them at some point can confess what it cost them.

This is achieved by limiting excessive inventory, high equipment goods and excessive utilities. Operational costs should be maintained within a reasonable budget.

One of the inappropriate cash procedures in this business is the banking of daily takings by whoever available. Not everyone is trustworthy and money at hand is very tempting. B. Pitt the business owner could assign one trusted person to be receiving this money and banking it so that he will account for any losses. Another inappropriate cash procedure is the taking of money from cash registers by any assistant to pay for small expenditure items like milk and stationery. One can steal and deny that he spent the money on these small expenditures. The third one is lack of checking bags of staff to ensure maintenance of security; this will encourage theft as these staff members will always know that no one bothers to check their bags as they leave work. B. Pitt should ensure restriction access to petty cash; keep cash transaction to minimum and keep money coming in separate from money paid out (Rezaee 2002).

Inventory management is very crucial in any business. If inappropriate inventory procedures are used in any business it is bound to break down and profitability can be easily eroded. Some of the considerations that B. Pitt need to put in place are; to ensure appropriate inventory procedures are put in place and some of them include; establishing benchmarks and quantifying opportunities for improvement, he should evaluate and develop policies and procedures for his company, optimize inventory holdings and replenish and align systems and functionality to business requirements and above all, train his employees in order to improve the current inventory management approach. Training will reinforce the basic principle and improve competency levels (Rezaee 2002).

Recommendations

B. Pitt should select his employees carefully and this can be done by using background checks that will have information about their employees’ prior critical records. He can also access reference checks if education verification is mandatory. He should strictly supervise his employees on a regular basis and this can be made easy by installing covert or overt video equipment to supervise the employees’ actions. He should improve the business accounting system by having one individual responsible for it and not any employee.

B. Pitt should consider limiting each employee to a specific task to end confusions so that if something goes wrong some where, he knows who to ask. Cases like any assistant can do this and that should stop for Hats Galore to continue operating effectively. He should also ensure staff bags are checked always before they leave so as to maintain security. Not anybody should unpack stock when delivered, there should be somebody employed for this work. B. Pitt’s number of employees is still low and he should consider employing more so that all the departments get enough personnel.
