Our Previous Samples

“Do not be afraid,” the angel proclaims to the two Mary’s as they approach the tomb. I am not sure the angel’s words were all that comforting. After all, the two Mary’s had a lot to be afraid of. First and fore most they had experienced an earthquake as they walked from the village to where Jesus had been laid. Second, the two Mary’s are in the presence of a supernatural being who is shining like a star. Add to these two factors the fact there were soldiers guarding the tomb and they risked being arrested simply because they had come to prepare the body of a Roman criminal, the Marys had a lot reasons to be afraid. Add to this the fact it seems whenever an angel has told someone to not be afraid, it usually meant God was planning to turn their world upside down.

Thirty-three years earlier, the Virgin Mary was told not to be afraid and then she discovered she would bear the child of God. Nine months later, the Shepherds are told not to be afraid and led to the place where God had entered the world. So don’t be afraid we are told just before discovering that the dead has been raised to new life. Afraid. . . overwhelmed, I think both would be fairly reasonable responses to discovering that the one you loved has returned from the dead. Afraid. . .overwhelmed are both appropriate responses to discovering that the world has started afresh.

This is where the empty tomb brings us, from desolation to hope, from grief to joy, from doubt to awe as we accept that God is powerful, more powerful than darkness and death itself. At Christmas we are told, not to be afraid for God is now with us. At Easter we are now told not to be afraid for not only is God with us, but also through the cross God has destroyed the power of death itself. In his letter to the Romans, St. Paul will celebrate this new reality by stating, “in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither, death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. ”With God and the hope of the resurrection, as the angel tells the two Maries have nothing to fear.

I am reminded of a former colleague from the State of Connecticut. Every time a new administration came to power, I would always get nervous as they inevitably would begin tinkering with staffing. Afraid of being laid off, the anxiety of the staff along with me would always move towards a fevered pitch. To this Tom would always tell us, “stop worrying, the worst they can do is cut your hair.” “Cut our hair?”We would ask, and then Tom explained that after two tours of duty with the army as an infantryman and having faced enemy fire, he had learned not to fear death. From his perspective, he knew if he could face death, he could deal with anything life threw in his way. This is the message of the empty tomb, with the power of death now destroyed we have nothing to fear. This is the Good News of Easter and as Peter tells those gathered around him in our reading from Acts, this is a message for all humanity, for “God shows no partiality.”This however is only the beginning of this morning’s story.

The Maries arrive at the tomb, nervous and afraid of what they might find. Then, they are told to tell the others and to seek the resurrected Jesus in Galilee. The underlying message is that what they have seen and what they have heard needs to be shared. Shared with the disciples, and shared with their fellow Galileans. But why in Galilee? Why is it there that Jesus has returned? Galilee is their place of safety. Galilee is the place where they first experienced the incarnate God. And it is from Galilee that the movement has begun and from where it now must spread forth. And we, who have gathered to celebrate the resurrection, who are the adopted children of God, who are redeemed though the blood of the cross and the tomb, we too must also move from this place of safety and Go, as Jesus instructs the Maries, to find him in Galilee.

Where is Galilee for you? Where is that place you have experienced the risen Christ in your life and where is that place God has called you to be. For that is where you will find your Galilee, that is the place you will continue to experience the risen Christ, and that is the place where others are waiting to hear your story of the risen Christ. So do not be afraid! For God is with you, death has been destroyed, and Jesus waits for you in Galilee where we must share this Good News with others. And yes, it is very good news.

Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing (1989) is about the day to day life in a Brooklyn neighborhood and the racial strains confined from within. It demonstrates the differences of the various characters of a modern neighborhood. Trust and brutality embody the ongoing troubles about racism in America. The language and gestures set the film to a higher representation and allowed the viewers to have a more realistic conversation about race/racism, which was not present in that period of time. The film begins with its characters waking up to a hot summer day and then commotion occurring in the neighborhood after the police unduly suppress and kill a young black man named Radio Raheem (Bill Nunn) for brawling with Sal (Danny Aiello), an elderley Italian American man in his pizzeria. The film, in spite of the release in 1989, with its social analysis on the impact that race has on police brutality is equally prominent today as was when it was released twenty-six years ago.

Do the Right Thing (1989) has a main theme of peace vs. war and of “…always doing the right thing.” While the tone of the film comes from the intense music background and ironically the makeup and clothes of the characters speaks to the narration of the film. Spike Lee depicts the characters stereotypically through their language and gestures. In the film, tertiary characters such as the Puerto Ricans are appeared tuning in to salsa music while drinking beer and speaking Espanol under their apartment buildings. Lee also shows the Italian Americans (Sal and his sons) wearing crosses and white/black tank tops as the aesthetic or stereotype of them. Another example is the portrayal of Radio Raheem wearing an African necklace while also holding and playing loud rap music through a boombox stereo. The aspects of performance in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing were where “various characters spoke directly to the viewer.” While Lee used the compositional aspects of design and clothing to enhance the film, he also used the means of music and sound in his film, both diegetic and non-diegetic. Whether it was Raheem’s rap music from his speaker, the Puerto Ricans salsa music, and or the shouting of the people in the neighborhood. The film plays the song “Fight the Power” by Public Enemy, and a saxaphone depiction of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” to set the tone for an equality and rights subject. In the scene of Radio Raheem’s death, the sounds of the neighborhood portrays how incredulity converts into fury, as the people in the neighborhood start to shout the names of more black victims of police brutality. In the next scene, the camera pans to Mookie’s shocked face, showing that he has realized the wrong in standing next to Sal and his sons. In this scene, the positioning of the characters is very important, because Sal is in the middle of his two sons, while Mookie is a bit aside from them; distant and disturbed, producing an important part of the films resolution as Mookie looks at a different light towards them.

Director Spike Lee used much of dialogue, setting, sound, clothing, etc. all to create an important environment for the film and the viewers. He wanted to reveal to the viewers a more realistic film concerning issues that were long before existent. Lee embraced the generalizations of race so as to condemn them and talk about social issues in the film. Do the Right Thing emphasizes on how these issues are not controlled and it is actually whom who can control/change it. The film portrayed society realities in a skillful cinematic way.

This essay will focus on the strengths and weaknesses of Virtue Ethics, a theory that emphasizes the development of virtues to become better people. While some argue that the weaknesses of Virtue Ethics outweigh its strengths because of its difficulty in application, others argue that the theory's strengths outweigh its weaknesses. One strength of Virtue Ethics is its focus on the individual's character rather than the situation they are in, allowing individuals to achieve eudaimonia. Additionally, the theory covers intentions and motives. However, the theory's weaknesses, such as its subjective nature and its lack of clear guidelines for decision-making, can make it challenging to apply in practice. Despite this, some still argue that the strengths of Virtue Ethics, including its focus on character and self-improvement, outweigh its weaknesses.

Firstly, one way in which it can be argued that the weaknesses do not outweigh its strengths is because Virtue Ethics is an agent-centered theory which means that the approach focuses on the individual rather than the situation. This is a strength because although an individual will be held accountable for their actions, whether right or wrong, the most important part is the moral development of the individual. Focusing on the development of an individual will have great impact because it allows them to learn from mistakes while working on their virtues at the same time. These virtues are known as moral virtues- they are developed by practice and habit. For example, an individual will have to practice the virtue of kindness by doing kind things such as helping an old person or sharing. This strength of Virtue Ethics shows that the strengths outweigh the weaknesses because it is important to make sure that people fulfil the best of their potential in order to reach their eudaimonia. Therefore, because this is such an important aspect of life overall, it must outweigh the weaknesses simply because of its importance.

Another strength of Virtue Ethics is that it helps achieve eudaimonia. Eudaimonia is the ultimate goal for humans. Humans reach their eudaimonia by flourishing and achieving the most that they can in their life. Virtue Ethics helps an individual achieve eudaimonia because of its encouragement to act virtuously and to avoid vices. By doing intellectual and moral virtues, humans are gradually reaching their eudaimonia. This is important to the theory because it has been put I place to help humans act in a way that will benefit them reaching their eudaimonia. This outweighs the weaknesses of Virtue Ethics because it helps humans want to be better people.

Finally, another strength of Virtue Ethics which can argue against this statement is that the theory does not simply do away other moral theories. Instead of Virtue Ethics not involving other moral theories completely, it teaches it in a different way. For example, Christian Ethics teaches humans to not kill or steal. Virtue Ethics approaches this by teaching us to act wisely and justly. By doing these virtues it will be highly likely that individuals will not kill or steal. This is important because humans can incorporate Virtue Ethics in with other theories that they may follow making it easier for them to understand how to act morally. This outweighs the weaknesses of Virtue Ethics because by not ignoring other theories, it makes it a strong theory to follow.

In conclusion, it is easy to argue that the weaknesses of Virtue Ethics do not outweigh the strengths because there are many good strengths in the theory that benefit humans a lot so therefore, the strengths are of great importance which are hard to be outweighed.

Video games do not affect adolescents’ behavior, do not cause lower school performance, and are not the source of depression. Are these statements true? Do violent video games cause behavior problems? The aim for the essay is to give argumentative answers to questions like these and make the last point for this controversial topic. 

Introduction 

Since video games’ sudden rise to popularity in the 1970s, many games were made and developed in a variety of genres, Sandbox Real-time strategy, Shooters, Multiplayer online battle arena, Role-playing Simulation, and sports Puzzlers and party games, Action-adventure Survival and horror Platformer. Because of these types of games, parents were outraged and claimed that video games were the main cause of rebellion and aggression in their children. Former US President Donald Trump claims that video games were responsible for the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, killing an estimated 31 people over the weekend. As Trump stated, ‘We must stop the glory of violence in our society, including the horrifying, horrifying video games that are common today. This includes the gruesome and grisly video games that are now commonplace.” Some parents also linked video games as the cause of depression in their children, which led to the dislike or even banning of games in their households. Gathering enough information through reading studies, research, and articles proves that video games do not only have their benefits, but the way it affects young adolescents is not the way parents claim it as.

First Main Point

The parents claim that their children behave differently when playing video games. They claim that their children seem to lash out more and talk back to their parents more often since acquiring their children’s games. According to the APA Task Force on Violent Media concluded that violent video game use influenced aggression based on our analysis of relevant literature directly addressing the topic. This effect manifests itself as both an increase in adverse consequences such as aggression, thought processes, and influence and a decrease in positive results such as social interaction, compassion, and sensitivity to aggression. However, some research shows that it’s the outcome of the game that can lead to aggression, not video games in general. And not only that but, the degree of difficulty that a certain game has can change the result of each behavioral outcome. The study titled “Competence-Impeding Electronic Games and Players’ Aggressive Feelings, Thoughts, and Behaviors” used several studies with different types of methods to control the competence and a variety of ways for examining aggression. Player perceived competence was directly correlated to gaming motivation, which was in turn negatively related to player aggression.

Second Main Point

Another claim is that the reason children don’t do well in school is that they spend too much time playing video games and don’t put an effort anymore into their studies. Gentile et al.claims that children playing such violent video games tend to be more aggressive and hostile to their teachers and may or may not hurt others, which may lead to them having lower grades and can affect their whole study. Even though they may be affecting the behavioral growth of adolescence, it is only a short-term effect and, most of this panic is just false information. Contrary to what adults are afraid of, those who play violent video games either become criminals or fail in class because of it. The work of Vltell indicates that Time Displacement Hypothesis proposes that the amount of time spent playing video games is directly proportional to the time spent on academic works. Typically a young individual who plays video games regularly had less time spent on academic work. Since video games commonly have difficult mechanics especially those who are competitively based, this could hone the cognitive skills of players, which means a regular playtime of video games may improve the attention capacity, visual orientation, and overall memory of the player this is especially the case in young children who showed greater improvements than their adult counterparts and, through observation and data gathering. He stated, “(…) they have found that regular gamers scored higher than non-gamers on tests of executive functioning, fluid intelligence, and working memory”.

Third Main Point

But one and last final argument that most people link to video games is that it causes depression in children. Some parents claim that their children started behaving in a depressed manner after playing video games. They claim that the violent nature of the games causes their children to have sudden bursts of negative emotions and seems to make their children unhappy. The study Daily Violent Game Playing and Depression in Preadolescent Youth investigated whether playing violent video games for years could result in an increase of depressive symptoms in preadolescents youth. Those who played violent games for 2 hours had a further increase in depressive symptoms, assessed by Tortolero et al. The problem with this claim is that there isn’t enough research to back this up. And when there is a study about this subject, they mostly have little to no effect on the players’ behavior. Reference to HealthyGamer reveals that video games do not have that connection because depression is based on the information that no studies have found concrete evidence that there was a link between the two. But video games are commonly used by adolescents to cope with their problems. As further stated, video games have good and bad effects too, Video games create a sense of community, Video games can be an enjoyable recreational activity and, Video games train your analytical mind are some of the examples of good effects it has on the players. In addition, Kowal et. al, work shows that commercial video games can alleviate the symptoms of the two most common mental health conditions, depression and anxiety. There is growing scientific evidence that video games have the potential to improve mental health outcomes.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is not video games as a whole that causes these effects or behaviors on adolescents, but other factors come into play. Such as the results or difficulty in the game, other major factors like the environment they live in, and their natural tolerance to these types of games. And since most of the claims that video games have significant negative effects on players and children alike have few studies proving those claims and most studies debunking them. Parents should supervise or look over the type of games children are playing. Each game has an indicated suggestion for what age players should play those games. These indicators are shown in the description below if it is on steam and the cover if you bought it via CD. And the time spent on playing should be monitored because there is a difference between whether they are playing the game or just plain old addicted.

A term commonly used today is to be “politically correct”, to speak so that you appeal to all minorities without offending anyone, as a politician would. This is played out dramatically in the book Fahrenheit 451; the society believed that every book offends some minority, turning people against each other with the strong statements and opinions which lie inside. They concluded that by burning the books they would be free to think what they wanted and live in peace. They tried to make everyone the same, forgetting that being unique makes them human. Government was just the tool used to enforce the burning, society had already done it in their mind.

When people stopped reading it was their own choice, “it didn't come from the Government down. There was no dictum, no declaration, no censorship, to start with, no!” Censorship began when people feared freethinkers, people who would die for what they believed. With books being feared, they were destroyed, furthering the process of making everyone “equal”; society began to have a personality, not individuals. In America today we see the beginnings of a nation that wants to live peacefully, asking no hard questions and remaining too prideful to admit wrong doing. People are told to “tolerate” others and their beliefs, but this makes their beliefs forfeit; both parties end up offended or compromising their morals to keep the other happy. A country will deteriorate in this state of mind and become ignorant of its own danger.

Government is often controlled by society as it is just a group of people that are, notably, ungoverned. The similarities between this fictional world and reality are striking, but concerning. One individual cannot possibly see all sides of a topic, this shows the value in constructive criticism and judging ethics often. A civilization that forces “peace” on itself by halting free thought has forgotten that true freedom is the right to reflect on a worldview and act upon it. The hard questions must be asked and groups should be offended for real peace.

The documentary Life and Debt represents a real example of the impact economic globalization can have on a developing country. Whenever I thought about Jamaica, I only considered it as a tropical, beach-like atmosphere and a tourist destination. I never took the time and considered what life could be like for those living there yearlong, and particularly those who were not involved in the tourism industry. The documentary shows Jamaica in a different light, by showing a pressuring problem of debt. The everyday survival of many Jamaicans is based on the economic decisions of the United States and other powerful foreign countries.

In the 1970s, the country’s former prime minister signed a loan agreement which ultimately led Jamaica to over four billion dollars in debt to the World Bank and IMF. Key to its success was a long-term development plan that could have prioritized native infrastructure and resources. But the IMF was not interested in the long-term. Demanding short-term repayment of the debt, they insisted that costs be cut in exactly those sectors that could support long-term development: education, health, and native–largely agrarian-based–production for the export market. Not only would Jamaica have to tighten its belt, it would have to open up its doors to foreign imports by eliminating all protectionist rules that favored local industry and farming.

This ultimately caused a sinking economy of low valued imports and sweatshops that destroy local businesses and agriculture. In the documentary, workers who are working gruesome six-day-a-week work schedules to receive the legal minimum wage of only $30 in US money for the entire week. Many women have protested against the poor compensation, and have been fired from their jobs; being placed on a blacklist preventing them from ever getting work again. The country’s ports are lined with the factories of high profile companies, such as Mcdonalds and Burger King.With these economic and political foundations in place, the documentary then proceeds to examine various sectors of the economy that have fallen victim to “globalization”. It starts with a trip to the countryside where local produce farmers explain how potato, onion and carrot imports from the United States have put them out of business. In farming villages that formerly provided livelihoods to virtually every family, there is nothing but unplowed fields and abandoned houses nowadays.We also learn that the native dairy industry has been destroyed by the import of powdered milk from the United States. Jamaican dairymen, who have been prosperous for most of their lives and who have provided jobs for their countrymen, show us the abandoned stalls that cows once occupied. Most of these animals were sold to slaughterhouses at a loss years ago. They also explain that it would be virtually impossible to restart the dairy industry if the price of powdered milk ever shot up. What is being fostered by the neo-liberal regime is not development but dependency.

The IMF assumes that the combination of increased interest rates and cutbacks in government spending will shift resources from domestic consumption to private investment. It is further assumed that keeping the price of labor down will be an incentive for increasing employment and production. Increased unemployment, sweeping corruption, higher illiteracy, increased violence, prohibitive food costs, dilapidated hospitals, increased disparity between rich and poor characterize only part of the present day economic crisis.

Role models are those that can be good example to others. This is because of the strong lead character and charisma that a person displays. Role models whether they are figures of high authority, parents, siblings, or even peers can have either positive or negative impacts on one’s life. There is some point in life when every child desires to live up to the standards set upon by their role models. In the conquest to be more like one’s role model, we strive to outline our better qualities, we acknowledge our flaws and try to conceal them or we may even lose parts of ourselves in the course of trying to be someone we are not. Role models have an impact on one’s life as they can motivate one to be a better individual, cause one to lose one’s identity, and can have a negative influence on one’s character. I agree with this statement that role models have an impact on a person’s life. So how the role model can impact a person’s life?

Firstly, role models entice a person to work towards his or her goals. The role models here have provided people with a glimpse of their vision and by doing so, people can recognize, comprehend and relate to their role figure. Seeing their role models successfully confronting hardships will motivate people to endure difficulties and crises. Role models can embed the quote, “If I can do it, so can you” in one’s life. This shows that we must be brave enough to do something about a challenge and do not be afraid to fail in doing so. Further, do not be afraid to fail because successful people learn from failures in the past and rise to achieve success. For example, the life experiences of one’s role model will teach and educate us in the lessons of life which cannot be found anywhere else. Gandhi made a difference by liberating India. He believed in independence and freedom of speech. His beliefs were not shattered despite being subjected to numerous obstacles like being thrown into jail. But it turned into majoritarian democracy, there were only a few who still believes in their tradition that men, and men only should be responsible or work to provide for their family but because politically speaking, women were now majority have a place in the politics, they have a say, they have agreed that women could work or decide what path their going to take, they have the right to ruled their own life.

Donald Trump clearly cares for his peoples’ well-being, and the American economy. Donald Trump is also the reason that 95 percent of U.S. manufacturers are optimistic about the future. Keep in mind that this is the highest number of U.S. manufacturers being optimistic - ever! However, I did find this information on whitehouse.gov, so can we trust this information? Is it not biased? Do the President’s positive decisions overway his negative ones?

The article that is created from the perspective of someone who is opposed to Trump alleged various facts that can be used against the American President. It included a lot of information regarding the negative attributes of the President. This article successfully created feelings of resentment and opposition to President Trump in readers. The examples of Donald Trump’s contrary behaviour the writer has included in this text could very easily change Donald Trump’s impression on people from being a suitable leader to an absurdly inadequate one. Such examples include; Donald Trump causing nearly 75% of Jewish-Americans to feel unsafe, his (as the article states) “inhumane detention of migrant children”, his identification as a Nationalists (a title correlated with Nazism and ‘White Supremacy’) and his behavior of complete hatred and racism towards many American citizens. To show the President’s childishness, the writer (Larry Garfield) decided to discuss the time when President Trump joined racist conspiracy theorists, who demanded that former President Barack Obama release his birth certificate, college transcripts, and passport records. The writer believed that if Donald Trump had not joined these people and had not become a promoter of the ‘Birther Movement’, he would have not been chosen as the Republican nominee for President, let alone becoming elected for President. This article projects President Trump’s recklessness, immaturity, and lack of fundamental adequate.

Why would Donald Trump get impeached? Did he get impeached because of his political performance? His personal behaviour? The President continues to not only make bad political choices, he is also a bad person overall, and this has nothing to do with the fact that he is President. These are all quotes said by the esteemed American President, a racist, sexist man. Not only does he call people with darker skin ‘blacks’, but he also considers women as nothing but objects. Does he have the right to say that he does not care for women who are doctors, who save lives? No. Nobody should say that least of all a president who represents an entire country. These are some of his mildest comments. I choose to not include all the horrible things he has said in this essay, due to the fact that they are so inappropriate. He has also made ridiculous comments on things in the political field and things that affect the ENTIRE WORLD. “It's freezing and snowing in New York--we need global warming!'. I am not sure about whether or not he meant this sarcastically, but nonetheless a person who is a leader should never say that he needs global warming. “I'm their worst nightmare.' - Trump on Democrats. When I think of this sentence, I think of two middle-school students arguing with each other, not the president of such a powerful country. “I take advantage of the laws of the nation. Because I'm running a company.' If this does not prove to people that Donald Trump is a bad President, then I do not know what does. He admitted that he is abusing his privilege as President, something no one else would dare to do. Not only does Donald Trump fail as President, he also fails as a person.

Does Donald Trump deserve to be President? To put it simply, no. This is just my opinion, however, there are many facts that back up my opinion - some that I discussed in this report/essay. The 45th President of the U.S. has not been as innocent and honest as everyone believes. He has disrespected women, African-Americans, Muslims, and thousands more. Yes, he supported the country in some (very small) ways, but his flaws greatly outway his compensation. Perhaps he should take a break from being President, look back and reflect on his mistakes. Maybe he should learn to respect others, and himself, before choosing to become a President. If we compare President Trump to other presidents, such as Barack Obama, we can notice the many negative factors of Donald Trump and the better, positive characteristics that former President Obama has. While one president decides to think that he is the ‘greatest nightmare’ of the opposing party and decides to be a racist person, the other decided to act like a reasonable, even-tempered person and say: “There is not a liberal America and a conservative America - there is the United States of America. There is not a black America and a white America and Latino America and Asian America - there's the United States of America.” This is what a President sounds like, a person against separation, even if separation will help them (in things like winning an election). A president is not selfish, is not racist, is not sexist, and does not think that they are above the law. A real President does not act like Donald Trump.
