After Mexico won its independence from Spain they started inviting American farmers to help prevent border violations and to protect them from Native Americans. Fast forward a couple of years later and come to find that there were more Americans than Mexicans living in the area of modern day Texas. As the listener goes further into the song, they are become familiarized with a darker synth line, which adds to the mysterious aspect of the track. What makes, “Billie Jean,” so interesting is that it plays out like feature film. From the introduction to the characters (Billie Jean, and Jackson himself) to the inner monologue of Jackson, the audience truly gets a cin- ematic experience with the song.

As the film plays out a out like a film, the plot seems to turn much more mature then what audiences have heard from Jackson in the past. Many have speculated what the true meaning of the song is, but I believe it is all up to personal interpretation. What I believe to be the story behind the lyrics is that Jackson’s experience with fame and being a celebrity has taken a dangerous turn. As he intro- duces us to a beautiful woman, I believe this is really about an obsessive fan who is extremely infatuated with the celebrity persona of Michael Jackson. This “Billie Jean” believes that Jackson is father of her child and will not let that thought go. Jackson, wanting to have nothing to do with this, tries to distance himself from the woman.

Throughout the entire song, Jackson is pleading and trying to convince us that he is not the father of this child, and this woman will not leave his mind. With all of these ma- ture themes being played out throughout the track, this seems to deviate from most of Jackson’s other songs. With a more energetic and lively tone throughout his previous catalogue of tracks, “Billie Jean,” does stray off of that. And that’s what makes the song that much more unique and special. “Billie Jean’s,” darker and more mature content led to a wider range for Jackson with his vocals, and production as well. Jackson and his producer at the time, Quincy Jones, disagreed whether or not this song should stay on the album. Jones believed the song was not big enough to fit within the album. In the end, they resolved their dif- ferences, and the song became a massive success.

With Jackson’s vocals really being the driving force behind the track. The power in his voice was truly incredible to hear, and also showed more range than before with his voice going into untouched terrain. Jackson seems to be biting his voice off in a few parts throughout the song, which drove the narrative of this being more a inner monologue even further. And with the backup vocals and layering of Jackson’s voice, this song truly resonates with me as the WEEK: 3 The Thriller Years NAME: best song off the “Thriller” album, and my favorite song from him out of his entire cata- logue. Michael Jackson’s, “Billie Jean,” was the first song that I heard from the pop icon when I was about eight years old. The vivid memory of seeing the music video for the song when I was at a friends house will always stay with me. Even though the song is incredible in its own right, the factor of nostalgia will hold a special place within me and my love of Michael Jackson.

As time went by, my appreciation for the song only grew greater. This song allowed me to discover more Jackson’s discography and is what in- troduced me into his wide range of pop hits and deep tracks. Even though Jackson’s “Thriller” is my personal favorite of his and incredible monumental and shifted the mentality of pop music for the time, there is one track that I believe is weak and could have been left off the album. The song titled, “Human Na- ture,” overall does not feel as if it should have been left on the album. What makes this song not a hit are the details. The production of the track just doesn’t do it for me. And with Jackson’s back up vocals throughout the chorus doesn’t help it either. Not a terri- ble song by any means, just one that I believed should have been left off the album, or reshaped in a more energetic way.

Talking about whether Michael Jackson’s, “Thriller,” was an over rated project is a simple conversation. It is a simple no. Even placing myself within the 1980s, when this album was at the height of its large reach to a mass audience. Jackson’s album gave a different meaning and sound to what pop was. With a more sophisticated style and manner compared to his last project, “Off The Wall,” this album truly defined who Jack- son was and solidified his place as a pop star. To see “Thriller” launch when it was first introduced to the world would more than likely given me a different perspective on the album and Michael Jackson. Since I grew up during a time where Michael Jackson was cemented as one of, if not, the greatest musical talents of all time, my perspective and thoughts on the album would have been drastically different compared to 1982.

The entire history of who this man was and his legacy was at my disposal, and to hear that history be told throughout the album added to my enjoyment. And to position myself in 1982, I would have most likely enjoy the album, but definitely not as much as I do now. As previously stated, the album gives off a cinematic quality throughout all of the tracks. From a crazed fan in “Billie Jean” to a horrifying night with “Thriller,” this album is in no way a disappoint- ment. Each song tells a story, and shines a more personal side of The King Of Pop that we have not heard before this album. Whenever I hear any tracks from this record, I always feel a sense of happiness and nostalgia that could never be replaced with any other artist than the King Of Pop himself, Michael Jackson.

“I’ve failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed” (Michael Jordan). He is a well-proclaimed G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time) in the way he played the sport, along with his aspect in the evolution of basketball. Michael Jordan is a historical figure because of his impact on the game in many ways, including his choices, whether good or bad, impacted himself and many others, along with his overall increase to basketball ratings of his time.

Michael Jordan was born in Brooklyn, New York on the 17th of February, 2003. Soon after his birth, his family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina. He soon realized that the new living area was not as busy and problematic as a city such as Brooklyn. His love for baseball was shared by his dad, but he followed his older brother, Larry, in playing basketball. He attended Laney High School in the southern N.C. city but was cut from the varsity team due to him being a 5’11” sophomore. He grew four inches in the summer before his junior year at Laney, allowing him not to be cut from the team. His first high school game marked the start of his path to superstardom.

Jordan attended college at the University of North Carolina for all 4 years. During his years being a freshman, Michael played in the sub-shadows of other superstar players, such as James Worthy. He was a superbly high rated player, and his performance showed that factor. A great example is against Georgetown in the NCAA Championship, which he played a superb game against a well-known Patrick Ewing. Jordan shone throughout the game, which he drained a 3-pointer, which claimed the championship for the North Carolina Tar Heels in the season of 1981-82.

In his sophomore, he was named the college player of the year by a popular news organization, The Sporting News. In his junior year, he received the exact same award, along with the Naismith Award, named after James Naismith, the creator of basketball, and the Wooden Award. He was drafted 3rd by the Chicago Bulls after 2 centers were picked by the Houston Rockets and Portland Trail Blazers.

Jordan’s rookie year had much more of a spark than many other players throughout the sport, with him, along with Team USA, winning a gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics (Britannnica.com). He scored about 28 points/game, which was 3rd best for that season. Michael won the NBA Rookie of the Year award, along with the All-NBA 2nd Team, which is pretty prestigious for a rookie. He helped the Bulls win enough games to get to the playoffs, but they got swept in 4 games in a best-of-seven series by the Milwaukee Bucks.

In 1985, during the All-Star Game, “The media ran with the idea that Eastern All-Star teammate Isaiah Thomas led a ‘freeze-out’ of the golden rookie, limiting his scoring chances”. Other than this conflict, Mike had a season about as average the previous season. 

The person I look up to is Michael Jordan. He is the star basketball player for the Chicago Bulls. He just recently led the Bulls to their sixth NBA championship. He is regarded by many as the greatest player in the history of the game. The qualities about him that make him my hero are, his attitude, his ability, and his personality.

Michael Jordan has a tremendous attitude toward life and towards basketball. He believes in winning, doing your best, and working hard. I’d like to think I go by the same principles. Michael Jordan also has a great attitude off the court. He is against drug and alcohol abuse and is all for the benefits of education. He also has a sense of never give up. He plays when he is hurt all the time. For example, in 1986 he broke his foot but worked hard to come back and lead the Bulls to the playoffs and a 63 point performance in one of the most memorable moments in the history of sports. Despite not winning in the playoffs, Michael came back year after year until he finally won his first world championship in 1991. This great determination is the backbone of the Chicago Bulls and it makes up what Michael Jordan stands for.

The next thing that I admire about Michael Jordan is his abilities and skills. He is the greatest basketball player of all time and has the numbers to prove it. He has six championships, numerous scoring titles, four league MVP’s, and he has the highest career scoring average of all time. He is also considered “Mr.Clutch” for he has hit so many game winning shots including the one over the Utah Jazz to give the Bulls their sixth NBA championship in eight years this past June.

He is not only good on offense but on defense as well. He has been elected to the NBA’s all defensive 1st team almost every single season he has ever played. He has lead the league in steals many times and is feared by every NBA player when he comes close by. He is an all around complete player in every aspect of the game which is why I admire watching him play. He puts people in the seats and is the reason why many people, including me, watch, play, and enjoy basketball.

Michael Jordan has a great personality which is another thing that I admire about him. He has good family values with his three children and his wife. His favorite foods are pasta and chicken as are mine. He also enjoys baseball as well as basketball, like me. He is a very charitable man. He holds many events for charity including golf tournaments and exhibition basketball games that bring in quite the sum for local and national charities. He also has a special place in his heart to please children and doesn’t want to disappoint them. One year for Halloween, he wasn’t able to hand out candy to the local children therefore he put up a sign stating that he could not make it but if they came back later he would give them all Big Macs. With such generosity, he pleases many children.

Michael Jordan has many characteristics that make him a great hero and role model to many people. Even though I have never met him I still feel that he is my hero. Michael Jordan may retire this year and I will be very sad if he does because basketball will lose its number one spokesperson, role model, and its best player. Michael Jordan is a hero to many and will always be looked up to by the public.

Considering an Additional Resource: FreshwaterThe Outlook for Depleting Natural Resources

As natural resources rapidly deplete globally, only extreme areas in the Arctic, areas of Africa, and the ocean floor remain, in what Michael Klare refers to “the world’s final frontier.” These virtually unexplored areas of the earth are now sought after by the largest, most powerful consumers of natural resources. Tapping into natural resources in these regions present several unique challenges with regards to access to the resources, extraction, political implications, impacts on the indigenous people, and conflict within the region. Throughout the book, Klare discusses several key resource topics and explains how each dynamic is intertwined within the political dynamics of the countries vying for these natural resources.

To set the stage, chapter one explains that the depletion of oil, natural gas, minerals, and farmland has left countries rapidly scrambling in search of previously undiscovered resources. The topic of deep and offshore drilling for oil and gas in chapter two highlights risks associated with extraction and shows how accidents can devastate the environment, such as in the case of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in April 2010. Various political implications noted in chapter three have accelerated the race between the United States, Canada, Norway, and Russia, five countries who all seek to lay national claim to undiscovered natural resources in the Arctic. As easy-to-extract oil and natural gas deplete, more complex extraction methods through tar sands, shale gas, and other unconventional hydrocarbons are used alternatively, as explained in chapter four. Furthermore, chapter five highlights the search for additional mining opportunities that present geopolitical and security concerns in countries such as Guinea and Afghanistan.

As chapter six notes, China is the primary producer of rare earth minerals used for multiple applications in technology. This presents concerns for the global economy as China controls the supply with far-reaching economic implications. Chapter seven outlines the ways in which climate change has impacted farmland in many countries who now seek opportunities to produce food sources in other countries through “land grab” deals. Finally, Klare notes that the wealth and power of a nation on the world stage often determines its ability to sustain and obtain natural resources, as a country who is unable maintain or adapt natural resources will likely enter into conflict in an attempt to obtain them.

National Security Linkages to Energy and Environmental Issues

National security is closely linked to both energy and environmental issues, as many nations compete for a finite amount of resources as global demand increases and supply decreases. Klare references the race for these resources as “the world’s final frontier,” and the depletion of the last resource reserves will force the consuming powers into a competitive struggle likely to lead to territorial disputes and conflict. With in-depth examples, the author links national security to environmental issues surrounding the exploration of energy resources. The most compelling case concerns climate change and the melting ice in the Arctic, creating an opening for the exploration of continental shelves to claim the rights of oil and gas. A residual effect is global rising sea levels and the eventual flooding of coastal farm areas, a particular concern in South and Southeast Asia.

Considering an Additional Resource: Freshwater

Missing from the list of natural resources is freshwater; Klare does not directly address freshwater scarcity. Although, he does address “land grabs” as arable land is sought out and purchased or leased for agriculture purposes. Freshwater is often disputed between nations not only for agriculture purposes but for supplying a sufficient freshwater source for a country’s population. A section dedicated to freshwater as a resource would highlight the additional complexities and dynamic relationships caused by the resource.

The Outlook for Depleting Natural Resources

Klare concludes that as the race for resources becomes more complicated, there is an increased risk of environmental disasters during extraction of the natural resource. This is exemplified in the Deepwater Horizon accident in 2010 and the Pennsylvania toxic gas leaks caused by hydraulic fracturing techniques to remove natural gas from the earth. Additionally, geopolitical friction between disputed islands in the East China Sea led to an escalation of force that resulted in China banning the export of rare earth elements, showing the world China had monopolized the extraction of the elements and there was a need to diversify the rare earth mineral markets.

Since the book was published in 2012, the critical issues Klare addressed in each chapter remain significant global energy and geopolitical issues today. The extraction of oil and gas from deep-offshore refineries, especially in the Arctic, is highly contested both by the countries claiming rights and by environmental protection organizations around the world. Refining tar sands, shale gas, and other unconventional hydrocarbons will continue to gain popularity as technology increases the refinement methods and global demand for fossil fuels continues to increase. Opportunities to mine in contested areas, such as Afghanistan, and to develop new supplies of rare earth elements remain a top priority for the Trump Administration. Finally, climate change is impacting the ability to supply food to countries who continue to purchase land to meet agricultural demands.

In the final chapter, Klare last discusses “the race to adapt” where he suggests extracting the remaining resources is the short-sighted, predictable outcome of completely exhausting a particular resource. An alternative approach for governments and the private industry is to implement a “race to adapt” by creating “a contest to become among the first to adopt new materials, methods, and devices that will free the world from its dependence on finite resource supplies” (227). If this is the way forward, Klare could have strengthened his argument throughout the book with specific examples, explanations of policy, and technological advances that could provide evidence to support his theory. There is little discussion surrounding the ways in which private industries or governments are working to address possible solutions through the use of alternatives to fossil fuels and until then acquiring the necessary natural resources will remain the priority.

Ever heard of the Tower of Terror? It’s a roller coaster in Six Flags, famous for its scary turns and loops, giving people the ride of their life. Everyone has been on that roller coaster, it just happens that for some people that instead of visiting Six Flags, they watched the news and saw the coverage on the economic crisis, or maybe they just got laid off of their job. The economy is like a roller coaster, it goes through waves, up and down. Some people can handle it, while others not so much. Michael Moore, a movie director who has a tendency to portray controversial issues in a very raw light, decided he wanted to focus on the economy. Moore created the movie Roger & Me, which was the story of the economic crash that took place during 1998, in Flint, Michigan. General Motors, which happened to be the soul of Flint, was closing its buildings- leaving thousands of people jobless. The series of events had its consequences, which the movie shows, as well as showing the contrast between those cut off and those still on top. The differences between the unemployed and the employed are drastically shown in several ways, including the attitude towards the Flint economic crisis, their status financially, and the new real estate situation after the crash.

During the months leading up to General Motor’s decision to close its factories, not once was any effort made to warn its employees of the life change they were about to face. Flint was a company town, with the majority of its population working for GM. When the news hit that 11 factories were closing, suddenly more than 30,000 people had lost their jobs. One of the worst parts was the fact that General Motors wasn’t even financially unstable at the time, so they couldn’t use that as an excuse for their decision to close. The attitude towards the now apparent financial crisis was very different depending on who was asked. When a GM spokesperson was asked what their view towards what they had just done, it was simply stated that “GM has as much concern for anybody,” while thousands of civilians were then still trying to deal with their new unemployed status. The people who remained working for GM were those who were at a higher level in the company to begin with. Their attitudes seemed to be completely indifferent towards the crisis.

From an employed point of view, Flint was still a perfectly wonderful town. They were content with how their lives were, and didn’t show any sort of concern towards all those who got dumped. While the remaining GM employees were still happy with their lives, and ignoring reality of thousands; those who were unemployed were still left over to cope. The unemployed had a completely different perspective towards what happened. GM was their life. Without a job from GM it meant no money for their home, their family, schooling, food, anything. The crisis left many people seeking superfluous jobs that needn’t even exist, but due to the fact that there was no where else to go, they did it anyway. The people who worked for GM were also qualified and skilled, giving them the potential to do so much more than help a customer find the right clothing to match their skin tone. The old workers for GM, who once had a role in American society, were then left with low income jobs or no job at all. The contrasting attitudes were obvious in the film, either you were on top, or you were on the very bottom, and you weren’t anybody elses concern.

With over 30,000 people fired, and the unemployment rate jumping significantly, many families found themselves in a new financial status. Those who were unemployed were struggling to get by. Because of the collapse of General Motors, it had the multiplier effect. Workers who were laid off stopped making an income, and then they discovered they suddenly couldn’t afford as much food as they wanted, leading restaurants to close. They suddenly couldn’t afford as much clothing as they could previously, causing some stores to go out of business. They suddenly couldn’t afford much of anything. Company owners began to go bankrupt. At a certain point, it seemed there was a very apparent difference between those employed and those who weren’t. Those employed had it really good, their financial situation was more than stable, and that was just getting better for them. While that was happening, the unemployed were becoming more and more poor. With little to no money, many people were driven to participating in theft and other explicit activities, causing the crime rate to also go up. Flint went through its own Depression. The rich got richer and the poor got poorer, with more and more distance between the employed and the unemployed.

After the crash, real estate was a whole different ball game. An empty bank account was the reality for many people, and with no money, how was someone supposed to pay the bills? Houses could no longer be afforded and maintained. People couldn’t sell their houses either, because nobody outside of the city would even dare move there. The unemployed found themselves in a hole that they couldn’t dig themselves out of. They were fired, couldn’t afford their home, couldn’t afford to sell their home, and so they couldn’t get out. The employed, on the other hand, didn’t even seem to care. They stayed in their nice houses, kept paying their monthly bills for the local Yacht club, and still went along with their day as if nothing was wrong. Around 28,000 people lost their homes, as well as their life savings, and were forced to start from scratch in a whole new place, while the employed didn’t even have to begin to worry.

The differences between those employed and those unemployed were harsh and drastic. In his movie, Moore captured the almost segregated-like feel in Flint at the time after the financial crash. The people in the top of the business showed no interest at all towards the laying off of 30,000 people, while those who were affected wanted nothing more than to go backwards in time. The wealthy became more wealthy, and the poor became more poor. Thousands of people left homeless, while there were still those GM workers living a perfectly happy life. In 1998, Flint had its very own Tower of Terror. The financial roller coaster took thousands by surprise, leaving them breathless, shocked, and their lives forever changed.

One of his fond habits is spending time with pets. At one time he got into a petty squabble with the local police in Brazil over a dog. He had visited the country with his wife who ended up liking a certain local breed. He then decided to go get it and, in the process, together with the taxi driver, collided with the local authority. He has got two dogs.

Family Man

He married in 1995 and has got children. He and his brother, his stepbrother too, are said to be close. He spends time with his family and even goes on outdoor escapades with his children. He has got a daughter and a son.

The artist broke from the convention when he did not include the king's future fearsome foe in this sculpture. Many people also believe that Michelangelo made the sculpture unique by representing the legendary underdog in front of the battle, which is clearly shown by anxiety in the statue’s face. The figure can be mistaken as left-handed from the slingshot lies, but in strangely, his body position suggests he is right-handed.

The sculptor was also a sign of heroic resistance against the odds and was placed in an intense look and a stern warning to the enemies of the state. The placement of this statue changed many aspects of its significance from religious to political perspective.

The block of the marble, which is now one of the greatest masterminds, proves the old saying that one man's trash is becoming another man's best treasure. Michelangelo built the statue from a vast, marble that had been rejected by two other sculptors. Duccio was one of the artists who gave up on the sculpture and left it untouched for ten years after that. Another sculptor, Antonio, also took up the project but abandoned it after claiming that it was too much of a pain to work with the marble. When Michelangelo took up the challenge, the sculpture had been idle for almost twenty years untouched. The statue is also too huge to fit perfectly with the rest of the body, and this asymmetry is believed to be the artist’s clever nod to represent David’s symbol, a strong of hand.

After a long-contested debate, the sculpture was placed outside the government offices of Palazzo Della in Florence, which created a secure connection with the public mind. In the year 1494, the ruling family Medici was overthrown and exiled from Florence. Because of this, the new republic was under constant threat from the exiled family, the Medics, and the surrounding states. The medics later came into power again in 1512, making the state experience what biblical Israel feel. It is believed that the sculpture's wary gaze was pointed towards Rome. These political tensions led to the statue being attacked several times during its early days after installation. The protesters hit it with stones, and unfortunately, in the year 1527, a revolt against the ruling family saw its left arm being broken into three pieces. The statue has also experienced recent attacks. In 1991, an Italian artist Piero Cannata smashed the second toe of the left foot but was held up by the museum's visitors to prevent any further damage to the statue. He later claimed that he had been sent by the model of the Renaissance artist Paolo Veronese.

Symbolism and Ideology of the Sculpture

Correctly, the people believed that the artist based the statue on the representation of Hercules, who as Greek legend but had deep ties with the city of Florence and at one time had appeared seal of Florence for a very long time. By building the statue in the Roman tradition, Michelangelo assisted in ensuring that the people of Florence still embraced this work. Five years before the building of the statue of David, Michelangelo’s artistic work pieta made him famous. Still, it was this work of David that expounded the high renaissance artist as a master in sculpturing. After that, he was also given another project in the Sistine chapel.

The sculpture of David is also more than one. Since it is one of the greatest artistic works on the planet, there are reproductions of its symbol in t-shirts, shoes, and other mediums. Replicas of the same sculpture also exist. Florence has two of them.
