One of the most extensive debates in the last decade is the topic of marijuana. The discussion has been about whether it should be legalized or not. However, many countries have legalized the drug after extensive research owing to its potential economic and social effects that might accrue if done in a well-controlled environment. One of the countries that have been at the forefront of this debate is the US. Colorado has been one of the many states in the US that have legalized the US of recreational marijuana. However, medicinal marijuana has been used in the health industry for quite a while now. The legalization of marijuana has had some economic and social impacts on the public. According to Light et al., the state of Colorado witnesses a total of $996 Million in terms of sales, a total of $ 2.39 Billion in terms of economic benefits and an overwhelming 18,005 jobs in terms of economic impact in the year 2015 alone (1). That is a lot of revenue generated by a single state. Perhaps that is why many of the states have been considering legalization of marijuana in other states as well.

The state of Colorado has immensely benefited from the legalization of marijuana. In the year 2014, the state’s economy only grew by 3.5%. However, the sales grew by 42.4%, thereby surpassing the other entire sectors in Colorado (Light et al., 6). In the form of taxes, the revenue collected from the sale of marijuana was the second largest behind tobacco in the year 2015. The revenue in terms of taxes was $63.4 million in the year 2015, and in the year 2015, it was $121 million (Light et al., 10). Therefore, the marijuana business in Colorado seems to be booming, and there is a possible increase in the number of marijuana establishments in the near future.

The legalization of marijuana has also not come without its share of problems. For instance, there was an increase in the use of cannabis, especially on the minors in the state of Colorado. Additionally, there have been attempts by wealthy individuals to take over the business from the locals, which has been faced with a lot of resistance that has resulted in violence. Drugged driving has also been on the rise among the people of Colorado, which poses a significant threat as testing of marijuana is not that easy based on the fact that marijuana traces in the blood can stay in the bloodstream for several days.

Some of the unintended consequences that have been associated with the legalization of weed include over usage of pesticides that are not even intended for marijuana. There has been a lack of pesticides that have been dedicated to marijuana specifically making the producers to improvise. Additionally, there were concerns among other established crop growers due to an increase in pests due to the proximity of marijuana crops (HAUN).

The benefits that have been witnessed in states such as Colorado cannot be overlooked. There is a dire need to look at the law enforcement mechanism so as to cater to some of the problems that have been witnessed after the legalization of marijuana. Colorado should collaborate with the scientific community to come up with testing devices that can effectively measure intoxication levels of marijuana to cab the drugged driving menace. The scientist should also come up with the rightful pesticides to cater to the pesticide issue that is not only posing a challenge to marijuana producers but also neighboring crop growers.

Should Marijuana be Legalized Throughout the United States

Marijuana should be legalized all over the US. Cannabis has been abused by millions of US citizens for very many years now. The best approach towards fighting such issues is to legalize the substance but implement policies that will improve and limit the use of marijuana. Additionally, they also get to benefit from it economically.

He is orderly, organized, systematic and controlled, and once committed, he employs decisive and methodical steps to problems solving without giving up easily, remembering that he has a magnetic power of his will. Marilyn possesses a practical and original energy with an eccentric appearing desire for realization, so due to the rare discipline and perseverance that Manson possesses, not everyone can keep up with him; he can be also rigid in his ideas and get stuck in convention. In a nutshell, this man is really odd in all the areas of his life.

Although his life has given a lot to talk about, this famous man has strictly followed his own paradigms, his own lifestyle. It is very obvious that his extravagant actions, and the physical and moral events that he has lived, are taking its toll on him today for not taking care of himself as he should have. However, its history has traveled the world in one way or another, leaving life lessons for some and badly influencing the lives of others, which in the end, people decide how his history affects them. Marion Zimmer Bradley’s The Mists of Avalon was published in 1983 and features a retelling of the legend of King Arthur through the eyes of the female characters. In the quotation above is the only explicit use of the word ‘Celtic’ in the entire novel, which total length is 876 pages. In the novel, source material from the Arthurian legend and elements from history are combined to tell the story of the women surrounding Arthur. The novel focuses heavily on the friction between Christianity and Paganism which is made narratively visible by the struggle for women in a male-dominated world. In the aforementioned quotation, Igraine is musing on her ‘fate’ as a woman to ‘do nothing’ as opposed to the women of the “Celtic tribes” who had an active role in society both military and politically.

The Mists of Avalon is a novel and is therefore exempt of the demand for historical accuracy. However, the elaborate use of Arthurian legend and the historical setting make it interesting to test its accuracies or inaccuracies nonetheless. Furthermore, the explicit mention of the word Celtic, which is a problematic term, invites further enquiry. The premise for this paper Robben 1 then is a simple one; are the assumptions made by the character Igraine, true for the source material, both historical and fictional? The Mists of Avalon is a retelling of the Arthurian legend, it features the story of King Arthur and his court and family. Some of the oldest prose material for these Arthurian legends is to be found in the Mabinogion I which is a collection of 11 stories now often published and read together though not originally intended to be grouped as such.

The stories featuring King Arthur are named the Three Romances and they are called Lady of the Fountain, Peredur, and Gereint. Though maybe not directly, Marion Zimmer Bradley’s novel is part of the Nachleben of these medieval prose texts and their French relatives written by Chretien de Troyes. Her retelling of the Arthurian legend then does not exist in a vacuum but is part of a cultural and historical discourse. Within the framework of literary theory and cultural materialism, this means that “All readings, whether radical or traditional, of all kinds of texts, are at some point ideologically motivated and constructed in the interests of a specific literary and cultural agenda” (Brooker 10). One could argue that Bradley’s novel is, an adaptation but also, a reading of the Arthurian legend with a distinct ideological of literary agenda. Her Arthurian quotations then are the backdrop for the ideological points that she is trying to convey to the reader.

In the citation, in the beginning, there are three points. The first is that women are fated to be at home. The second is that women do not engage in fighting or the forging of weapons and thirdly women are not allowed to give counsel or advice and as such have no political agency. The ultimate contrast for all the above is made with regard to the societal structure of the Celtic tribes, where women were in fact allowed to do all these things.

The implications of the social structure observed by the character Igraine in the novel are best felt in the character of Gwenhwyfar. Especially when contrasted with the Gwenhwyfar presented in the three romances. In the Mists of Avalon, Gwenhwyfar is married to Arthur and crowned High Queen. She is in love with Lancelot and her entire internal monologue consists of her adhering to the stereotypical role for women as described by Igraine. For example: “'Poor Arthur, thought Gwenhwyfar, this marriage is more of an ordeal for him than for me—at least I have nothing to do but obey the will of my father and king!” (Bradley 775). Gwenhwyfar has nothing to but to obey the men in her life. The role of Gwenhwyfar in the Mists of Avalon is to live out the prophecy made by Igraine about the life of a woman. The ‘strong’ women in the novel are the women who are not part of the traditional structure at all. The only positive strong women who feature in the novel are part of a separate class of religious pagan priestesses. In a way, this retelling of the Arthurian legend needed an entire Otherworld to create strong women with agency. In short: “In these feminist retellings, the character’s femininity is embodied in the intersection of their military (or strategic) and spiritual leadership.” (Pugh 76). This manifests as a negative portrayal of femininity instead of an empowered one.

In the Arthurian source material found in the three romances, Gwenhwyfar is Arthur’s queen. A closer look at the story of Geraint vab erbin will maybe illuminate some of the differences between the medieval source material and the mists of Avalon. Geraint and Enid are one of the three Welsh romances. In this tale, Geraint gets to marry Enid after winning a hawk. Soon after their marriage, he neglects his duties as a military man. One day Enide tells Geraint of some of the criticism she is hearing from the courtiers. Geraint thinks Enide is being unfaithful to him and decides to punish her. Through a series of challenges, Enide convinces him of her love for him. They come back to court and Geraint fights a warrior of the otherworld of mist and breaks his curse. Although Gwenhwyfar and Arthur are minor characters in this story. They are king and queen and are interacting with Geraint and Enide. Furthermore, they are important for the matter of honor that is so important in tales of chivalry and romance. This is also described in A companion to Arthurian literature: ‘traditionally Arthurian literature foregrounds the masculine ideology of chivalry. Heng posits that the masculine thereby “inhabits” the textual consciousness. The feminine register, on the other hand, can be found in the repressions of the text; in the “alternative discourses” or “competing voices and claims” which, if not contained – papered over, smoothed out, filled in – would threaten the stability and unity of the text. The feminine register therefore traditionally inhabits the textual unconscious” (Fulton 466).

Another point about the position of women in the three Welsh romances is that the women are in positions of power but it is a second-hand power (Winward 103). In other words: they have to join the system to beat the system. This does however not mean that they do not give advice. In Geraint for instance, Gwenhwyfar gives Arthur advice on what to do with the stag’s head: Gwenhwyfar said to Arthur, ‘Lord,’ she said, ‘this is my advice regarding the stag’s head: do not give it away until Geraint son of Erbin returns from the quest on which he has gone’––and Gwenhwyfar told Arthur the purpose of the quest. ‘Let that be done, gladly,’ said Arthur. They agreed on that. (Davies 150) And so Gwenhwyfar counsels Arthur on what to do next and he accepts it. And even when Gwenhwyfar is seemingly making herself submissive to Arthur, she makes sure to inform him again of how an insult to her is an insult to him as well: ‘Whatever mercy you wish I will show him, lord,’ she said, ‘since it is as great a disgrace to you, Lord, for me to be insulted as for you yourself.’ (Davies 152).

Helen Fulton has argued that Gwenhwyfar is making herself an object and her sole function is to enhance his prestige. I would argue that this is not the case, Gwenhwyfar is merely reinforcing a social code. By reminding Arthur of the fact that their status is so intertwined, she reminds him of the responsibility he has towards her but also towards himself to keep her reputation. It is obvious than that in the Welsh source material, Gwenhwyfar is not expected to do anything and sit at home in her castle. In Geraint, she joins the hunt (Davies 140) she gives advice about armor without Geraint asking her explicitly (Davies 143) Gwenhwyfar welcomes Geraint back at court (Davies 153). So, in the source material, it is clear that women, although queen, in this case, is not expected to keep silent or passive. It is then a very odd development to see one character turned into a passive and oppressed role. The Gwenhwyfar in the Welsh source material is strong but not in a military role, she counsels and advises but not in matters of war.

In the mists of Avalon Igraine asserts that before the Romans came, women had a stronger military position. Since there are no written sources for that period, there is no possibility to really prove this. The Welsh laws on the position of women are codified in the Hywel Dda but this was only written in the second half of the tenth century. (Ellis 5). In the Tribal Welsh law codes, which maybe derive from an oral tradition. The following entries are of interest to the position of the queen the Welsh Celtic law code, for example granted a queen the right to freely circuit through the land (Ellis 31). Furthermore, daughters could inherit an estate if there were no male lineal descendants or collaterals in the fourth degree (Ellis 389). She could acquire and hold land of her own in her own right by purchase or inheritance and such land did not pass under the control of her husband (Ellis 436). With regard to Queens, the code makes it clear that they have no power in matters of the state except what she might be able to exercise through her personal influence on the King (Ellis 31).

The Gwenhwyfar in Geraint is far removed from the Gwenhwyfar in The Mists of Avalon. The retelling of the Arthurian legend by Bradley makes references to a romanticized Celtic past were women had more agency because they were more engaged in military matters. In the Welsh Arthurian source material, Gwenhwyfar is active and gives advice to both the king and his knights. Gwenhwyfar goes out to watch the hunt and gives advice on armor. The romanticized Celtic past that Bradley is referring to probably does not exist. The Queens who get to enjoy the outdoors is, however, only a few retellings away. The Welsh law codes do not prescribe a passive role either but this is only relevant if the Welsh laws are older than the manuscripts they appear in, and unfortunately, we cannot go to them for advice.

A divorce is a formal ending of a marriage between married people. In our society today, most marriages do not succeed, and some end in disharmony and break and culminate into divorce. Generally, divorce is the outcome of the failure of marital adjustment between a husband and a wife. A divorce is more permanent than separation as it involves a legal process. What constitutes marriage and divorce varies widely. When you’re in the midst of a divorce, you may experience intense feelings of loneliness or that nobody understands what you’re going through. There are many factors involved which may lead to divorce. This essay will discuss some of the reasons or factors that are basically responsible for divorce in society. These include infidelity, money, constant arguing, addiction, incompatibility, young age, laziness, lack of communication, high expectations, abuse, lack of intimacy, and physical appearance.

Infidelity is the act of being unfaithful to a spouse or other partner. It means engaging in sexual relations with a person other than one's significant other. Infidelity - also referred to as 'adultery' and commonly known as 'cheating' on one's partner - is near the top of the list of reasons for divorce among couples. It does not matter whether it is a wife or husband who is unfaithful, the repercussions can be devastating for the entire family. Various factors may lead to adultery such as lack of intimacy and communication as well as sexual dissatisfaction in marriage. Some cultural beliefs may also promote infidelity; for instance, after giving birth (during the postpartum period of sexual abstinence), a woman is expected to abstain from sexual intercourse for a specific period to recuperate. The disadvantage of this practice is that some men may become tempted and indulge in promiscuity, which is detrimental to the couple's relationship and marriage.

For some, infidelity is the main reason for divorce, and for others, infidelity is something that happens at the end of years of other problems, such as nasty conflicts, incompatibility, and substance abuse. Marital infidelity is one of the factors threatening family structure and consequently the most fundamental sense i.e the sense of belonging. It also raises the fear of rejection among individuals. Extra-marital affairs are responsible for the breakdown of most marriages that end in divorce. Sometimes, people who cheat do so simply for sex. Sometimes, it’s not about the relationship but just because the cheater doesn’t respect the marriage. Infidelity is one of the most distressing things you can experience in a romantic relationship.

The reality is infidelity fundamentally changes your marriage. It erodes trust and leads to a breakdown in communication. Sooner or later, infidelity usually catches up with you which is why it is one of the leading causes of divorce. Even if your marriage does survive, it will be fundamentally changed forever. You will end up admitting to being a cheater, or you’ll end up carrying around a fair amount of guilt (assuming you have a conscience) for years. People cheat for different reasons. Passion fades over time. The thrill with your spouse is gone, but the desire for thrills remains. Sometimes it has to do with anger and resentment over something a spouse is doing. Cheating may take place due to a lack of self-esteem. At other times, it may be something as simple as a difference in sexual appetite or a lack of intimacy that needs to be satisfied. Infidelity may also start as a casual relationship that evolves into an emotional affair, and then becomes a physical affair. That is often the case with people in work situations who spend large amounts of time together.

Money fights are the second leading cause of divorce analyzed in this essay. The way couples handle money is an indicator of a successful relationship. The inability to deal with money can lead to divorce. Financial considerations — wives’ economic independence and total household income — are not predictive of divorce in either cohort. Time use, however, is associated with divorce risk in both cohorts. For marriages formed after 1975, husbands’ lack of full-time employment is associated with a higher risk of divorce. Most couples make financial mistakes that ultimately lead to divorce in society. These mistakes include; first is managing money separately: the choice to keep money separate doesn’t lead to divorce on its own, but it can often lead to dishonesty about spending habits, income, or savings. A spouse may keep secret accounts if they find out that their partner’s spending habits are unsavory. According to a Policygenius survey, one in five people keeps and manages money separately from their partners. An even greater percentage (24%) don’t share any major financial accounts, including checking, savings, credit card, or mortgage account, while almost 30% of couples don’t even know each other’s salaries. Among couples who don’t manage money together, 20% say they plan to leave their partner due to financial problems, while only 4% of couples who manage money together told us they plan to leave due to their partner’s money issues. Rudder said. “If you agree to be together, there should be some sort of shared financial dream together.” The second is the lack of communication. A couple that doesn’t know where they stand financially, due to a lack of proper communication between them, will ultimately fail and this can lead to resentment and distrust. The Third is financial infidelity, this is a horrible betrayal and it’s almost as bad as physical cheating. Financial infidelity is often the result of small financial choices made without the other’s partner’s knowledge.

Addiction is often referred to as a family disease, due to the way it negatively impacts the addicted person’s loved one. This impact can be acutely felt within the landscape of a marriage. Addictions can range from alcohol to sex to work. Addictions hijack a partner's brain and can become one's top priority. And when it’s gone so far, the victimized spouse can say enough is enough and he/she gathers the courage to leave hence leading to a divorce. Alcohol and substance use are among the most common reasons that cause divorce in society. Some of the effects resulting from alcohol and drug abuse by a spouse are; destruction of trust, financial hardship, instability, disruption of intimacy, both at an emotional and physical level, increased rates of domestic violence and aggression, and increased rates of childhood abuse and neglect. When you think of addictions, you probably think of drug or alcohol abuse. But addictions come in many forms. All of them can threaten the very survival of a couple staying together. When couples grow apart, they may turn to other addictions such as gambling, pornography, uncontrollable spending, or infidelity. An addiction can take control of a spouse’s life and put them in danger of losing their jobs, friends, and marriage. When addiction is present in a marriage, it will cause a spouse to lie, cheat, steal, or otherwise betray the foundational trust that a marriage is built upon. It’s no wonder that addiction is one of the most common causes of divorce.

When couples are not aligned on the big things in life, like religion, core values, where they want to live, and how they want to live, friction is bound to happen. Incompatibility isn't easy to deal with especially if one spouse has significantly changed over the course of time. Incompatibility in marriage wrecks the mental peace of both partners. It makes day-to-day relationships boring and uninteresting, and this may often lead to divorce. When you got married, you were sure your spouse was the person you wanted to spend the rest of your life with. But truth is, people, grow up. You both take on new challenges. Habits and interests change. Your careers move forward. You become parents. Perhaps you both modify your political and religious views. Local and world events impact your way of thinking. Tragedies affect you. Your circle of friends breaks up. New people enter your life, and you like them, but your spouse may not. Change is inevitable. Change is necessary. And in many cases, change is healthy. Like it or not, if you have been married for any amount of time, the person you are now is not the person you were back then. The same goes for your spouse. In a healthy marriage, change is welcomed. It is celebrated. But in other marriages, change means growing apart. You no longer share the same vision for your day-to-day living or your future. You no longer share the same passions that you once did. Your circle of friends changes. More often than not, you do “your thing,” and your spouse will go off and do “their thing.” It’s unfortunate. But it happens more often than you might like to think. That lack of compatibility often leads to lots of arguments. Things that used to roll off your back don’t any longer. You are constantly unhappy. You go from having great expectations to just seeking a way out. And in some cases, distancing yourself from your partner may also lead to acts of infidelity as you try to replace what you’ve lost in your marriage. When people from quite dissimilar backgrounds (different religions, caste, class, culture, educational status, ethnic group, etc.) marry, the necessary adjustments in role expectations are more difficult and divorce is more likely.

Marriage done at a very young age increases the likelihood of divorce, especially in the early years of marriage. Higher divorce rates in society are mostly among those who marry in their teens.
