What are parental rights and how do they apply in specific family law situations? Parents ask lawyers questions such as, "Could I have a chance to get sole custody?" "What is joint custody?" and "If I take my case to court, what chance will I have that the judge will see it my way?" The answers to these questions may not be as specific as parents would like. The only sure thing is that court appearances are costly, emotionally draining, and often accompanied by long waits for court dates. In respect to family law, two major points are especially useful to remember. Try to stay out of court and know the laws.

First, parents should try to stay out of court. This means that parents should negotiate issues between themselves and their attorneys. "Parents should avoid court hearings with their testimonies, experts, and the adversary process. The traditional adversary process forces people to choose sides rather than negotiate. The idea, however disguised, is to compete and win. Despite many advances in the family courts and family law, the best advice is to do as much as you can to settle the issues, especially about the children, out of court" (Johnson 50).

Second, parents should know the laws. This is particularly important for those who represent themselves in court, called In Pro Per. Parents must be aware of their rights, their children's rights and family law. In relation to the Superior Court of California, County of Alameda, "California uses legal labels such as sole custody, physical custody, joint custody and visitation". It is important to understand the distinction between the different legal labels.

According to California's Family Code Sections 3000-3007, "the terms primary custody, sole custody, and sole physical custody usually mean that one parent has all, or nearly all, the responsibility and authority for the children". Sole legal custody is a term used for decisions made about health, religion and education. Joint custody and shared custody are terms used to define the division of the authority and responsibility by each parent to raise a child. However, it does not mean that all decisions or time is equally shared. "Joint custody does not mean equal time. Most legal interpretations of joint custody are that each parent is significantly involved in raising their child. It does not have to mean equal time. Although an equal division of time is preferable, and more common, an equal division of time occurs in only a small percentage of families" (Ross 26).

Visitation can take many forms, including reasonable visitation, which dos not specify exact days and times, and scheduled visitation, which is more precise. Reasonable visitation allows the parents to create their own visitation schedule. It does not specify days and times. Court-scheduled visitation specifies which days and time the parents have the children. The order is very detailed. The impact of a stable visitation arrangement is more positive than the frequency of visits. "Children who have regular visitation arrangements for up to three years following their parent's separation do best and are more competent socially. Families who establish schedules in the first year of separation are more likely to maintain them" (Ackerman 97).

Responsibilities for children are usually divided into two categories: legal and physical. Legal custody is the right to make major decisions about the children. The parent granted legal custody is the guardian of the children and will make important decisions about the children's health, education, religion, and welfare. Physical custody is the right to have the children live with the parent.

Legal and physical custody are further divided into two more categories: sole and joint. Sole assigns the right to one parent exclusively, while joint shares the right between the parents. The advantage of sole legal custody is that it may reduce parental conflict by clearly establishing who has authority to make decisions. The disadvantage is that by making one parent solely responsible for the child, the other parent is reduced to being a visitor. Sole legal custody may be appropriate when one parent is too unstable to make basic decisions for the children. Joint legal custody requires both parents to share information and must consult and agree on issues regarding the children's health, education, religion, and welfare. The scope of the issues may be stated in the custody order or may be left undetermined.

"California, which has always been a leader in matters of family law, enacted a Joint Custody provision in divorce laws a number of years ago. By 1986, 33 states had followed suit and in most states it is now the preferred option. Courts are free to order joint custody today, even if one parent opposes it" (Lansky 122). Physical custody is the right to care for the children on a daily basis. As with legal custody, physical custody can also be assigned solely to one parent, or shared between them. Sole physical custody, also known as primary physical custody, usually means the children live primarily with one parent, and that parent is primarily responsible for supervising their daily activities. Joint physical custody shares the daily child-rearing decisions between both parents. Under joint physical custody, the children typically spend a more equal time with each parent. The advantage of joint physical custody is that the parents will have frequent contact with their children.

"Parents who jointly make parenting decisions about their children are the parents who, fortunately, feel the least amount of unfairness, and for whom custody arrangements work best. Court decisions about custody are necessary only when the parents can't agree" (Lansky 124). When parents dispute custody, the court may order a custody evaluation to help make the custody decision. Custody evaluations are often ordered when one parent accuses the other parent of harming the children. The purpose of the evaluation is to assess each parent's ability to be a parent, and to assess the best interests of the children. Custody evaluations are conducted by mental health professionals, typically a psychologist or psychiatrist who specializes in child psychology. The disadvantage is that the evaluator may be incompetent and make a devastating evaluation. The quality of the evaluation is crucial and plays a significant role in the final custody decision. "The judge follows the recommendation of the custody evaluator at least 86 percent of the time in permanent custody disputes, and 99.9 percent of the time in temporary awards of custody pending settlement or trial of the case" (Garrity 51).

Family law can be complex and demanding. The decision to be represented by an attorney or to self-represent is up to the parent. Attorneys can both litigate and negotiate. A good attorney will facilitate negotiations out of court, with the other parent's attorney, keeping the case from becoming more costly and public. The most successful attorney is one who knows how to promote a good agreement out of court, not the one who is constantly in litigation.

Referrals from friends and business acquaintances are the most common ways to find an attorney. A parent can also check the phone book or his local bar association for referrals. The parent should ask for an appointment to interview the prospective attorney. There may be no charge for a half-hour consultation. It is best, if time permits, for the parent to interview at least three attorneys. The parent should feel a rapport and trust with the attorney and should know how the attorney feels about divorce, joint custody, and child support. The parent should ask about the monetary range for a case similar to his or hers and should ask about fees and billing procedures. There are flat fees, percentages, and hourly fees. The parent will be billed for phone calls, correspondence, court time, and time talking with the opposing counsel. Never should a parent share an attorney with his or her spouse. It may seem less expensive, but in the long run, it will not be. It is also illegal in the state of California.

Even when a parent has an attorney, s/he still has to do a lot of work. The attorney cannot be expected to know all of the answers, take over all of the unpleasantness of the child's other parent, or change the other parent's behavior. In addition to attorneys, it is best to talk to friends and counselors about the pros and cons of the law, legal labels, and parenting arrangements.

A parent In Pro Per retains control over the decision-making process. After all, it is the parent, not the attorney who has to live with the court order. When the parent allows another person (such as an attorney) to make the decisions, the parent loses his or her ability to influence the outcome. "Often, an attorney will apply a "one size fits all" strategy that may not be suitable for the parent. Since every family is unique, the parent is the only person who can accurately say what is best for his or her children" (Oddenino 79). No matter how great the intentions are the attorney cannot fully relate to the parent's situation. In such case, it is best for the parent to represent him or her self.

To aid a parent who is In Pro Per, many legal forms can be filled out online. EZLegalFile, http://www.ezlegalfile.com/index.jsp, is a website with an interactive program that helps parents fill out the forms necessary to request or respond to papers for a variety of legal issues, including Family Law. The parent first selects the county in which they live then follows a tutorial for information on starting a child custody proceeding or responding to legal papers the other party may have filed. After the parent follows the website's wizard program and answers the appropriate questions, the appropriate forms are completed by the program and can be printed out for the parent to take to their local courthouse for filing.

The Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act defines a child custody proceeding as a proceeding in which legal custody, physical custody, or visitation with respect to a child is an issue. The term includes a proceeding for dissolution of marriage, legal separation of the parties, neglect, abuse, dependency, guardianship, paternity, termination of parental rights, and protection from domestic violence, in which the issue may appear.

The initial forms a parent must file, when initiating a child custody proceeding, are an Order to Show Cause, Application for Order and Supporting Declaration, a Summons for Petition of Custody and Child Support, an Income and Expense Declaration, and Proof of Personal Service. There may be other forms depending on the nature of the parent's divorce and whether there are any allegations of domestic violence. The person who initially files the family law documents becomes known as the Petitioner and the child's other parent becomes known as the Respondent.

An Order to Show Cause is used when an order pending hearing (such as a temporary order) in a divorce, parentage, or other family law case is sought, and the respondent has not been served with the summons and petition in a family law case. A notice of motion is used to change prior orders, and for initial orders after service of the summons and petition when no order pending hearing is sought.

An Application for Order and Supporting Declaration is a form, which tells the court specifically what the Petitioner is requesting. It specifies how much time the Petitioner is recommending that the Respondent have with the minor children and whether or not the Petitioner is requesting Child Support. A parent who would like to set a court date for a hearing in front of a judge must write a Supporting Declaration. The Supporting Declaration tells the court what the parent wants and why. It is a statement, which explains the issues of the parent's case. The court reads all paperwork prior to the parent's hearing date. Because of the large number of cases before a court, the judge cannot always allow ample time for both parties to fully explain their case verbally. Therefore, for each request a parent makes, s/he must provide specific facts, which would support the decision that the parent wants the court to make. Headings are recommended, with spaced lines between separate issues. The parent must consider the important facts that he wants the judge to know.

A Summons for Petition of Custody and Child Support must also be completed and filed with the court. After the Summons is filed it is served, by a third party, to the Respondent. If either party is requesting Child Support from the other party, then a Child Support Case Registry Form must be completed. The information on this form is included in a national database, which among other things, is used to locate absent parents. When a parent files a court order, s/he must complete the Child Support Case Registry Form and file it with the court within ten days of the date the parent receives the court order. If any of the information on the Child Support Case Registry Form changes, the court must be notified within ten days of the change. The form is confidential, and unlike the rest of the forms in a Family Law case, is not filed in the court file, meaning it will not be seen by either the Petitioner, the Respondent, or either party's attorneys. It is maintained in a confidential file with the State of California.

An Income and Expense Declaration supports the Petitioner's Child Support Request and is used by the court to determine how much child support should be granted, and to which party. When filing an Income and Expense Declaration, three copies of the person's last three pay stubs, or a recent profit and loss statement if the person is self-employed and/or owns any rental property, must be attached.

Proof of Personal Service indicates that a person, who is not a party to the action, and not protected under any orders, served specific documents to the other party, either the Petitioner or to the Respondent. The form indicates what documents were served, how they were served and by what means they were served. The person to be served can be served either in person or by mail. A person who is 18 years or older must serve the documents. The person who served the papers, signs the form and the form is filed with the court.

There are many fees and court costs involved with filing documents and appearing in court. The fees vary from county to county, and in some cases, can be waived if the parent can prove financial burden. In most cases, the petitioner or the respondent asks the other party to reimburse them for their court fees necessitated by the appearances in court. It is up to the judge to determine whether the fees will be reimbursed and to make the fee schedule.

"When considering a custody arrangement it is important to note that an all-or-nothing parenting arrangement is usually not the optimum situation for a child, or for the parents. It is best to find a way to share or divide the responsibilities" (Shaw 68). According to California Family Code Section 3020 (a), "it is the public policy of this state to assure that children have frequent and continuing contact with both parents after the parents have separated or dissolved their marriage, or ended their relationship, and to encourage parents to share the rights and responsibilities of child rearing in order to effect this policy, except where the contact would not be in the best interest of the child".

There are different custody arrangements, each with it's own strengths and restrictions. Although the court will most likely decide the custody arrangement, parents can influence the court's decision by taking an active role in negotiating issues and by knowing the laws. When parents stay out of court and work out custody arrangements amongst themselves, custody becomes simple and it becomes easier to provide continuity in their children's relationship with both parents.

The nature of a Family

A family is a group of people consisting of parents and their children that love and support each other psychologically, financially, and physically and it includes blood relatives, and “people connected by marriage and adoption” . A person defines a family based on their personal experiences, their socialization process, their background and the culture they lived in. All of those factors shape the definition of a family. Some definitions such as the formalistic definition suggest that a group of people should have “certain observable traits” to be a family, others such as the function based definition focus on the “functions that a family performs” , it “focuses on what they do, rather than what they are” . These different definitions show that there is no clear way in which a family could be defined, especially because there are different types of families like cohabitation and same sex relationships.

Robert and Rhona Rapoport (1982) were one of the first sociologists to notice the changes that were happening to English families . They claimed that nuclear families were not the only type of families existing and different types of families are appearing. They argued that all types of families should be acknowledged . Furthermore, According to Herring, “family life has been transformed with cohabitation, divorce, children born through assisted reproduction, increased acceptance of same sex relationships all leading to different understandings of what family life is all about” . Herring recognizes that families are different than what they were before based on societal changes and increased acceptance of unconventional ideas. Moreover, these changes demonstrate that promoting family life or referring to family law carries with it its risks until there is a clear meaning to family law . It is important to define families because the law seeks to protect families and when it defines a family it intends to cover the groups that are regarded as a family and which parts of the law covers which individuals . This does not mean that the law excludes groups on the basis that they are not a family but that some people need the law more than others .

Functionalist Approach

The Functionalist approach suggests that family law has specific functions that it aims to achieve . Eekelaar argues that family law has three functions: to protect family members from harm, to help family members adjust to different circumstances (e.g. divorce), to support and increase families . However, there are some problems with this approach. The Family law act 1996 does not only have one aim but tries to balance different aims and the law is not the only influence on family life, society also affects how a family functions . The Functionalist approach provides the judiciary wide discretion in deciding which relationships are considered a family in this functionalist perspective . Dewar claims, family law is chaotic and that it is harder to regulate because it deals with feelings and that is human nature, which is an aspect the law cannot control .

Feminist perspectives

This perspective considers how the law affects men and women in particular how the law favors men more than women . Feminists claim that women are unappreciated and controlled by men and that the law discriminates against women. The roles of women and men formerly used to be, the women as a child-carer and the man as the breadwinner. Currently, these roles have changed in that women might be the breadwinners and the man might stay home and take care of the children . Feminists argue that the law formerly discriminated against women in adultery as a reason for divorce. The man could divorce his wife based on adultery but a women could not unless there was another reason that goes against morality .

Feminists claim that in divorce proceedings the court takes into account that the man, as a breadwinner, contributed financially to the home but it fails to take into account women’s contributions, which is taking care of the children or cleaning . Giddens argues that feminists stress domestic abuse and the power men hold over women , he gives an example of marital rape, which is now illegal . Other societies have honor killings which also discriminates against women based on the fact that a man can kill a women who he thinks has dishonored him. Feminists’ perspectives have some limitations to it. One of the limitations is that the different feminist ideas of Marxist, Radical and liberal feminism might be against each other, which would make their ideas weak. Another limitation is that feminists claim that the law is not doing everything it can to protect women against domestic abuse . The law, in the past, did not protect women against domestic abuse, however, these days, women are protected within the law against any abuse as a result the feminist ideas are considered outdated . Those feminists’ arguments do not take into account that some women want to be with men and want to get married . Another approach related to Feminism is the familialism approach, but according to Dewar, this approach “places much importance on woman and deprioritizes children which are also vulnerable and in need of protection” .

The Public/Private Distinction

The public/private distinction is based on the idea that family life is divided into public and private areas . Arguments in the public/private distinction focus on the fact that the law has a right to regulate on public areas and that the law should not interfere in the private areas of family life . According to Houlgate, the law has to distinguish which parts of family life should be intervened in and the parts that should be kept private . Traditionalists argue that the law should intervene when there is any type of abuse in the family . Houlgate argues that the as long as the state reforms the law based on societal changes and adjustments are made based on family then there should be no distinction between public and private, it remains a political concept and the law must intervene . He also argues that sex is a private area and it is claimed that the law should not intervene in it, but the law does intervene because “there are laws prohibiting certain kinds of homosexual conduct” . This means that the law does intervene when it is morally obliged to intervene. His argument is that the state intervenes just by regulating areas considered private . In addition, the European law seeks to protect the private life in Article 8 of the ECHR “the right to private family life”

Moreover, the case of McGuire v McGuire shows that what happens in a household is a private matter if the spouse chooses to continue in the relationship and it is an area where the law cannot intervene and chooses not to intervene. This case concerned a wife that went to the courts in regard to her husbands’ behavior in the household and that he did not provide for her financially and did not provide the basic entities to the household. The court accepted in this case that the husband’s behavior was unacceptable but they could not intervene in such a private matter . This case shows that there is a public/private distinction in these types of cases.

Martha Fineman notes that the idea of non-intervention in the private sector is a negative aspect when it comes to privacy because privacy should not tolerate child abuse and that this area should always allow state intervention . It is very hard to draw a line between the private and the public sectors of family law, based on the idea that the women is mostly in the private part of the law dealing with the household and the husband with the market which is the public side of the law . The law cannot state to which extent it will intervene in family life because it intervenes when anything wrong happens within the private home and this depends on different circumstances . That is the reason why the law is uncertain in this area because its aim is to protect from abuse and anything abnormal and it keeps changing based on different societal changes .

Family law and Families

As mentioned earlier, the law requires to define a family in order to know which laws applies to which groups. The changing societal changes are affecting how the laws are reformed . In Fitzpatrick v sterling house Association Ltd , the family was considered in terms of the Rent act 1977 . The court considered whether same sex couples could be considered a family. The court stressed that there should be a sexual relationship in order to prove that a familial relationship exists and that it differs from a friendship . The Fitzpatrick case shows that the law does not only have a definition problem with ‘family’ in just family law, but that it also has this problem in other areas like taxation, property and contract. Moreover, the law does not define a family based on blood relations and marriage only, but it also acknowledges that other relationships can be considered a family if they can show that there is a “degree of intimacy, stability and sharing of lives” . As Herring notes, the law takes a mixture of a function and formalist based approach .

According to John Dewar, “family law is chaotic” . He argues that it is chaotic in terms of the relationship between children and their parents . Moreover, family law deals with the legal part of the relationships between families, which are divorce, marriage, abuse etc. Family law reflects on the term family because its main focus is families and relationships that stem from families . It is argued that family law is chaotic because it may not have a clear goal of where it is heading. This could weaken the functionalist idea because functionalists argue that family law has specific functions that it seeks to achieve. In order to get a better understanding of what family law aims to do it should focus on what its functions are . The term ‘family’ is important to define in family law when looking at the private/public distinction because the law needs to know where it can intervene and whether an area is considered private and so it should be beyond the reach of the law . In addition the difficult part of assessing the relationship between families and family law is that family law tries to promote equality and it is difficult because of the changing roles of the man and women in the family .

Conclusion

This essay has revealed that there is no one way of defining the term ‘family’ which causes uncertainty in this area of law especially because different relationships are being accepted as a family, and as a result family law does not have a well-defined aim. The different theoretical approaches of feminists, functionalist and public/private distinction show that family law has many issues when assessing the relationship between the law and families. Family law needs to know what relationships are covered within the law in order to know whom to protect. However, if the law strikes a balance between the conflicting ideas of the different approaches it will reach its goal in defining the relationship between law and families.

Genetic ancestry research, or genetic family tree, maybe a way for humans fascinated in family records (genealogy) to go beyond what dad and mom or historic documents may additionally inform them. Examination of DNA variations can provide the perception of where the ancestors of a man or woman would possibly have come from and approximately household relationships. Many kinds of genetic variations are frequently shared amongst human beings of particular backgrounds. The nearer the two people, families, or populations are to every other, the additional variant styles they typically proportion. Family tree essay (examples) can be enriched through the use of genetic ancestry research, which allows individuals to uncover insights about their ancestral origins beyond what traditional records can offer.

For family tree three types of genetic ancestral studies are drastically used:

  • Y chromosome trying out

Variations inside the Y chromosome transmitted completely from father to son can be employed in the direct male line to observe ancestry. Y chromosome checks can entirely be executed on males due to the very reality there is no Y chromosome for girls. However, regularly females who are involved for the duration of this pretty genetic checking out hire a cousin to get the take a look at done. Because in lots of cultures the Y chromosome is exceeded on identically because the household names, Y chromosome trying out is regularly wont to study troubles like whether or not two families with the same surname are related.

  • Mitochondrial DNA testing

The genetic versions in mitochondrial DNA are hooked up by way of this kind of test. Although the bulk of DNA is contained within the karyon in chromosomes, the cellular structures are referred to as mitochondria moreover have a tiny low quantity in their DNA (called mitochondrial DNA). All ladies and men have mitochondrial DNA, which is passed on from their parents, so either sex can use this structure of research. It presents statistics about the ancestral line without delay from women. Mitochondrial DNA trying out is also useful for genealogy because it keeps details approximately woman ancestors that could even be neglected from the ancient document thanks to how frequently the surnames are surpassed down.

  • Single nucleotide polymorphism checking out

Such assessments measure huge numbers of variations (single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs) throughout the entire genome of a man or woman. The effects are in comparison with those of others who took the exams to indicate an ethnic background for a private. The pattern of SNPs, as an example, may additionally moreover recommend the ethnicity of a persona is about 50 percent African, 25 percent European, 20 percent Asian, and 5 percent unknown. Genealogists use this kind of test, due to the checks of the Y chromosome and therefore the mitochondrial DNA test, which best symbolizes single-own family lines, does not mirror a character's complete ethnic background.

The checking out of genetic ancestry has numerous drawbacks. Test vendors observe take a look at the consequences of people with special preceding to take a look at facts, so ethnicity estimates may also moreover no longer be ordinary from one agency to a different. Ethnicity estimates are based mostly on genetic attempting out that varies from the expectancies of a man or woman because of the fact maximum human populations have moved various instances all through their records and combined with neighboring communities. thanks to the size and historical beyond of the group, most participants percentage numerous SNPs in ethnic businesses with a smaller variety of genetic versions, and it needs to moreover be tough to inform aside individuals who have a reasonably current common ancestor from the crew as a full, like fourth cousins.

Many corporations and organizations offer genetic ancestry checking out. Many organizations provide online forums and other sources that enable humans who are examined to proportion and discuss their outcomes with others, which can assist them to search out hitherto unknown connections. Scientists can use the findings of cumulative genetic ancestry exams from many populations on a big scale to study populace records as they developed, migrated, and combined with different corporations.

In conclusion, genetic ancestry testing provides an exciting opportunity for individuals interested in genealogy to uncover insights about their family history beyond what traditional records can offer. With the use of Y chromosome testing, mitochondrial DNA testing, and single nucleotide polymorphism testing, researchers can gain insights into the ancestral lineage, family relationships, and ethnic backgrounds. While there are limitations and variations in the results of genetic testing across different vendors, this technology has the potential to unlock fascinating discoveries about human history on a large scale. As genetic ancestry testing continues to advance, it is likely to play an increasingly significant role in helping people connect with their past and understand the broader history of human migration and evolution.

In the modern era, where the entire world is moving towards advancement and countries are improving rapidly in all fields, the acts of family violence proves to be a black patch on our positively growing society. At times, family violence was considered to be a result of primitive thinking of our society but unfortunately the state of this subject has not changed much with the modernisation of our society. The primary objective of this review is to analyze the issue of family violence in Canada over the years.

Problem Statement

Of all the violent crimes that were reported in Canada in 2016, more than one quarter (26%), was as a result of family violence. According to statistics, 67% of the people reported to be abused in the family violence occurrences were women and girls (Government of Canada, 2018). Family violence occurs when someone decides to use abusive behavior to harm or control a member of their family, or an individual with whom they are in a relationship with. Over the years, reports of family violence in Canada have been emerging, and the law enforcement team has always tried to do their part in ensuring that people that commit these crimes are apprehended (Department of Justice, 2017).

However, despite the many arrests and charges, the issue of family violence in Canada has always posed a serious challenge to the law enforcers since more people continue to engage in this behavior. Over the decade, research has been conducted on family violence in Canada, but none has been able to give recommendations that would help tackle this issue for good as the cases still arise. Understanding the reason why family violence occurs, the types of family violence often happening and victims could help shed some light on the matter in the attempt to find a lasting solution. To do this, more research will be conducted on this subject and presented in this paper as well as recommendations for addressing the vice. Approach:

Finding, Analyzing and Comparing Literature To find a lasting solution to the problem at hand, research will have to be conducted on this subject from different resources. The first step would be to research about the various forms of family violence that are occurring in Canadian homes. This information would mainly be found from published resources such as news articles from websites, academic resources such as a peer-reviewed journal article and finally from printed resources such as books.

The more the information found, the better it will be for idea presentation and finding what research so far has been able to help in dealing with the issue. In doing so, it would be easier to see the gaps in the literature and therefore proper recommendations given on the same. To be in a position to understand and provide the relevant information to tackle this issue, there is need to be efficient ways of gathering information and most of it would come from government resources, law article and from the police department to help analyze why family violence occurs in many circumstances and try to come up with viable solution to the issue by drawing recommendations.

Organization of the Literature

Much of the literature that will be used for this topic will depend on its relevance to the subject. For this reason, the literature used for this research seeks to understand the different types of family violence that is occurring in the society, what the government is doing to prevent such cases and the reason why these cases have continued despite the efforts the law enforcers input. There have been reports that have emerged in the country claiming that family violence is under-reported (Government of Canada, 2018). This makes the vice to be underestimated yet it poses a tremendous danger to the society. If this is the case, it could be the reason that the issue is still ongoing. Not much focus is given on the issues as required to tackle the problem. The literature that would be used for this assignment will be dependent on its relevance in presenting the available ideas on the subject matter as well as the possible solution that has been provided before to attempt to find long-lasting solution.

Scope of Literature

The main subject at hand is working with family violence, and more concentration will be on finding sustainable solution towards working around the issue. To ensure that much is covered on this subject, information will come from newspaper article including their websites, law enforcement reports found on the web, case studies and report papers, published as well as peer-reviewed journal articles. Literature Analysis: Family violence has been an issue in Canada that has not yet found a sustainable solution as the problem keep resurfacing. This behavior includes many forms of emotional as well as physical abuse. In addition to this, it could also involve neglect that is carried out by a person in an intimate relationship or by a family member (Directorate of employment, labor and social affairs, 2013). This type of violence could involve a single act of abuse or many repeated acts which form a pattern of mistreatment and exploitation. Many people that are reported to have engaged in family violence in Canada have used some physical abuse on their victims.

Family violence could have severe and even fatal consequences, and therefore this matter has to be taken seriously, and the perpetrators brought to book (The Royal Women's Hospital, 2018). Not only should the law be enforced, but a lasting solution should be devised to curb the menace. In Canada, no criminal code specifically binds a person from committing family violence, but if the act occurred against a family member, the person that would have done it would still be charged using other criminal codes (Weiss, 2011). There are different types of violence including sexual, physical, financial as well as emotional abuse and neglect (Gibbons, 2015). It is essential to understand that these different forms of family violence occur in a wide range of contexts and relationship. Not all could happen in a family set up alone because as it has already been established, family violence also occurs among people in intimate relationships.

Physical abuse is the intentional use of force against an individual without their consent. It could be slapping, pushing or shoving, stabbing, shooting, burning, throwing objects at an individual or even killing a person. As it can be noted from this list, some of these acts are quite severe than others. Another form of family violence is sexual abuse which could happen if one is forced to engage in sexual behavior without their consent, forced to do humiliating sexual activities or continued sexual acts when asked to stop (Women's Shelters Canada, 2017). Physical and sexual abuse being the most common type of abuse, more research is often conducted on it, and this would be the point of concentration. Rand & Rennison (2004), different surveys have been conducted since 1972 on family violence trends and how they affect the community at large. According to these surveys, it has been established that females are the greatest victims of physical and sexual abuse in family setups and relationships compared to their male counterparts. Looking at many surveys that have been conducted on this subject, most are focused on reporting about the violence that is performed on women (Couture, 2018). While they are not wrong in assuming that family violence is occurring to women alone, it is essential to analyze the effects of the behavior and how it is affecting our society for both males and females.

One of the vital reasons for addressing family violence is because children tend to learn what they see and could portray these behaviors when they become adults in their own family (Campo, 2015). As a result, these acts bring about moral decay in the society, and if this cycle is not stopped, then it could be detrimental to the populace. In Canada, various solutions have been created by the government and other peace-keeping initiatives to ensure reduced incidents, and that action is taken against any person with this behavior. The Government of Canada family violence initiative brings together 15 federal government initiatives that is geared towards responding to violence at any time (Kohut, 2016). In addition to this policy, centers for victims have also been set up all over the country for easy access as well as end violence against girls and women campaigns being undertaken. As much as these are all viable options, they have still not been able to rectify the situation entirely. What needs to be done in this situation is to understand the cause which could be divisions in the family, former family experiences while growing up, and the desire of people to be in control of everything by any means necessary (Sutherland,2015).

When these points have been addressed, the best possible solution will result from the government focusing their attention on this and establishing proper systems to address the issue.

Conclusion

The research that has been conducted so far on working with family violence has primarily focused on pointing out women and girls as victims of physical and sexual abuse. While they are the primary victims, more attention should be turned towards establishing what causes the instabilities in the modern family to create these traumatic experiences against their loved ones and not only females. As much as the government of Canada has done its part in trying to manage this menace, enough has not been done. For the services offered by the government to be efficient for its people, it is recommended that more initiative and programs are set up to investigate and address the vice before it gets out of hand. Family violence can be controlled if all stakeholders work together to find a cause to and thus a sustainable solution. Moreover, there are quite a lot of strategies which are being applied to try to stop or lessen family violence. It is significant to review the helpfulness of a strategy that is being used. Restructuring the legislation in an attempt to make sure that family violence falls under the compass of the bylaw is imperative. Matrimony laws are vital as well. They women ought to be able to enter freely without coercion into a marriage or to go away, to acquire monetary credit, and to own and manage property.

In this analysis, I will be looking at Famous Brands Limited. I will be looking at the overall history, tasks, main brands that form part of its brand portfolio as well as how their brand portfolio compares to another corporation and the impact of current affairs on Famous Brands. S The Halamandres family came to South Africa from Greece in the 1950s with just 50$ between them and the will to work hard and achieve something. George, who was one of the brothers, decided that Johannesburg needed a new addition; specifically an American-style Steakhouse. This would later be known nationally as Steers. The first Steers opened in the 60s. Famous Brands Limited is a holding company that is listed on the JSE (Johannesburg Stock Exchange) under the category of Consumer services: Travel and Leisure, and is now Africa’s largest branded food service franchisor.

Performed that help meet customer needs.  Brands has 15 manufacturing sites all over South Africa. It is a vertically integrated business that manufactures a lot of licensed products for both the franchises that fall under their brand portfolio as well as retail customers. Famous Brands is the largest branded food service franchisor in Africa and this is partially because their operations span the entire supply chain from raw materials to developed and/or finished products. They manufacture anything from bakery items to fruit juice. Logistics[image: Image result for Famous Brands logistics routes map]Famous Brands’ logistics division is customized to the preference of the franchise to which they deliver. This function gives the company a key advantage, both strategically and in terms of competitiveness, which helps boost the way they treat their franchises. The groups ‘Centres of Excellence’ allow them to get closer to their franchise partners by aligning their franchising and logistics businesses. These centres help Famous Brands deliver the best service and products to their franchises. Their total warehousing space consists of more than 20 000m? under roof and an average 1600 line items are held in their warehouses at any one time. Their fleet consists of a total of 117 trucks which are all refrigerated as well.

The brand is known best not only for its famous Wimpy Coffee, all-day breakfasts and specialty burgers but also for including a wide selection of grills, salads, shakes and desserts to their menu. Wimpy has become a common house-hold name in South Africa. This is largely due to their constant growth in popularity. In addition to high streets and malls, Wimpy is also represented on the forecourts of Engen petrol stations along the country’s major highways, where it is now standard issue to pick up something from Wimpy whilst filling up with feul.  Debonairs Pizza was born in 1996. It was the idea of two young men from Pietermaritzburg and on their opening night, they sold eight pizzas.

Unlike today where the company sells 2. 9 million pizzas a month! Debonairs Pizza has now become the leading pizza brand in Southern Africa. Debonairs owes most of its success to the fact that it focuses on innovation – from its creative pizza offerings and use of the latest interactive technology to its free home delivery service – and has won numerous awards from consumers and industry authorities alike.

Brand Portfolio Comparison Famous Brands Limited vs Gold

Brands Investments Gold brands investments has a much smaller brand portfolio than Famous Brands. Famous Brands has 23 brands as part of its brand portfolio whereas Gold Brands investments has only 9 brands as part of its brand portfolio. The brands that form part of Famous Brands are all quite well-known compared to those that form part of Gold Brands Investments’ brand portfolio. These factors all create a competitive advantage for Famous Brands. The fact that they have more than double the amount brands in their brand portfolio compared to Gold Brands gives them a huge advantage as people are more likely to end up at a chain that is part of famous brands. Also because Famous Brands’ brands in its portfolio are so well known and are all over the place, they have an advantage of Gold Brands.

The issue being discussed in this article is that of the minimum wage increase. The minimum wage for South Africa will increase to R20. 00 per hour. This may seem like a good increase however there are many debates going on about if this is enough to be considered liveable and how it will affect businesses positively and negatively. It could be beneficial to some workers however it could negatively affect others, especially those who work in smaller businesses and rural areas. Workers in rural areas and those currently working in small businesses could be particularly affected and are more likely to suffer job losses as a result of this national minimum wage increase as businesses (especially smaller enterprises) might not be able to afford to employ the amount of staff that they can now due to the fact that they will have to pay more per worker. They will therefore need to retrench some of their staff members in order to be able to afford to pay their workers the new minimum wage. Economists are now saying that this adjustment is not going to benefit South Africa but rather it will weaken its economy due to the amount of job losses.

For example, in better paying sectors (such as manufacturing), wages negotiated by collective bargaining councils have reduced employment by about 10%. However the affects in worse-paying, smaller enterprises are not so clear. This is due to the fact that these sectors are typically covered by government imposed minimum wage legislation. Agriculture is a huge focus in South Africa as it is one of our main sources of income. The increase in the minimum wage will affect smaller farmers as they will have to retrench workers in order to pay those who will keep their jobs the required minimum wage. This will affect production rates as less people will be working at one time so less will be done in the same amount of time. This isn’t a major problem for Famous Brands though as they are a huge corporation with many employees and this wage increase will not heavily affect them. If anything this will benefit them. The reason I say this is that now people will be able to buy goods from brands that form part of Famous Brands’ brand portfolio.

PESTLE factor relating to the article: This article relates to the Economic PESTLE Factor because it has to do with economic issues that we face as a nation and how the economy, in its current state, is causing huge problems for businesses. This article speaks the effects of South Africans and the extremely high obesity rate in this country. In fact South Africa is the second most obese country in the world and the most obese country in Africa. The article speaks about all the different ways that people become obese. One of them being genetics and another being Technological and lifestyle changes. It also touches on the different factors and/or causes of obesity. The article talks about how the amount of children that are obese is immense. Obesity is a huge problem in South Africa at the moment. So much so, that businesses are considering it a major threat and are figuring out different ways to overcome it.

Famous Brands is especially in trouble when it comes to the high obesity rate in South Africa as most of the brands that form art of its brand portfolio sell unhealthy food and/or have little or no healthy options on their menus. This is where the Famous Brands management team needs to step in and demand that brands implement healthier options to their menus to help deal with this problem. Brands such as Steers and Wimpy might have one healthier option on their menu which is not good enough. This item is probably also the most simplistic healthy item like a salad. People these days will be looking for healthier options to eat rather than fast food, especially millennials who are going vegetarian and vegan. The Franchise should also advertise healthier options as one of their main features and not in a minuscule sense. This will help attract more customers to their franchises. The PESTLE Factor that relates to this article the best is the Social factor as it deals with demographics and people’s personal beliefs and ways.

The business can make sure that it puts a certain amount of money aside to cater for issues with wages just so that if there is a dispute, they are covered. Businesses, in my opinion, should always have a back-up account in which it stores money so that when challenges like this pop up, they don’t have to retrench staff in order to be able to cover themselves. Avoiding retrenching staff will also avoid legal conflict as many staff will feel as though they have been unfairly retrenched and will probably take it up with the CCMA. Article 2Famous Brands really needs to encourage brands to introduce healthier options to their menus. This will help resolve the problem of limiting their consumers because there are no healthy options on their menus. A lot of people nowadays will be looking for healthier options instead of Fast Food in order to stay fit and healthy.

In conclusion, Famous Brands Limited is a very well organised corporation that makes a good amount of profit. There are however some areas that could be improved which I have mentioned above. A lot of people don’t even know about Famous Brands, but rather the brands that are part of its portfolio. The biggest problem that they will face in the near future is the obesity factor of South Africa. They will need to implement strategies to minimise the effect that this challenge will have on the businesses that form part of their portfolio and even themselves as a corporation. All-in-all though, I feel like they are running themselves impeccably and that they are in the right mind set.

One of the oldest and most famous suspension bridges in the United States is the Brooklyn Bridge, which spans over New York’s East River and connects Brooklyn to Manhattan. The driving force behind the construction of this iconic landmark is a trailblazing female engineer named Emily Warren Roebling. Emily was born on September 23, 1843 in Cold Spring, New York to an upper middle-class family. She was the second youngest of twelve children, but was especially close to her older brother, Kemble Warren, who enrolled her in a convent school in Washington, D.C. to further her education when she was 15 years old.

Emily met her husband, Washington Roebling, at an army camp in 1864 and they were married a year later. Her father-in-law, John A. Roebling, was the principal designer of the Brooklyn Bridge, but he passed away from tetanus before the project could be finished, leaving his son Washington to take over the role of chief engineer. During construction of the bridge, Washington became ill with decompression sickness and was unable to physically continue working on the project. As a result, Emily assumed much of the responsibilities of the project and acted as a liaison between her husband and the engineering team. She regularly went to the site to relay her husband’s directions to the workers and to answer their questions. In addition, she began to learn about the technical aspects of bridge design by studying subjects like strength of materials, stress analysis, and cable construction. She acquired extensive knowledge about bridge engineering and became so proficient in managing the duties of the project that many people suspected she was the real brains behind the construction of the bridge. She also served as a spokeswoman for her husband and represented him at important social functions. Emily’s persistence and dedication to the project made the completion of the bridge possible, despite her husband’s failing health.

Emily’s contributions to the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge were recognized by Congressman Abram S. Hewitt when the bridge officially opened in 1883. As commendation for her efforts, she was given the honor of being the first person to cross the bridge after its opening. She also took great care to make sure that her husband would retain his position as chief engineer. When his title was jeopardized due to his illness, Emily met frequently with politicians and officials and convinced them to let her husband remain chief engineer of the project. After the completion of the bridge, Emily and her husband moved to Trenton, New Jersey, where she oversaw the construction of the Roebling family mansion. Although she is mainly known for her work on the Brooklyn Bridge, Emily attained may more accomplishments throughout her life. She played an active role in various social and philanthropic organizations, such as the Huguenot Society and Daughters of the American Revolution. She also continued her education in her later years and went on to obtain a degree in business law from New York University. She travelled extensively and remained socially and academically active until her death in February 1903.

Emily Warren Roebling was a remarkable individual whose dedication and tireless efforts made the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge a reality. At a time when women were expected to simply manage the affairs of the household, she proved that regardless of gender, one can accomplish anything with hard work and determination. She served as a shining example of the capabilities and brilliance of women. I selected Emily Roebling for these reasons, and because she made significant contributions in a male dominated field. I was inspired by the amount of work and effort she put into the Brooklyn Bridge project. Emily went to great lengths to acquire as much knowledge as she could about bridge design and construction, and without her efforts and active involvement, the completion of the bridge may not have been possible. She will stand throughout time as a role model for young women who want to pursue the engineering field.

Emily left behind an influential legacy through her work and accomplishments. She paved the way for future female engineers to follow her example and apply their knowledge and skills towards achieving their goals. Her achievements have inspired me to continue learning and acquire more knowledge to grow as an engineering student. She has also inspired me to remain dedicated to my career goals despite any obstacle and aspire to achieve something great just as she did.

Alexandre Gustave Eiffel is well known for various architectural designs of his such as bridges for the French railway network the most famous one being the Garabit viaduct. Though he is worldly known for the Eiffel Tower in Paris and taught in American history to aid in building the Statue of Liberty in which it was a gift for America.

To begin with, I chose Gustave Eiffel as an engineer to write on as I have an interest in history whether it be French history, US history, or even World history. I have also had an interest in visiting Paris one day as I believe that it is extremely beautiful there and I would like to compare the culture in France to ours in the United States. Lastly, Gustave Eiffel and I share the same birthday of December 15th. Though he was born 168 years before me.

As a matter of fact, Gustave Eiffel had an interest in construction from a young age in which he would later attend École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures or the College of Art and Manufacturing. He then graduated in 1855 at the age of 23, specializing in the construction of metal, more specifically bridges. He then continued his career as an engineer building structures that only became stronger and lighter as time went on.

Importantly, Eiffel labeled himself a “constructor” in 1864 after he spent several years in France supervising work for the great railway bridge. This would later lead him to over hundreds of metal structures, but there were other astonishing assignments such as the Porto viaduct in 1876, Garabit viaduct in 1884, the dome part of the Nice observatory, the astounding Statue of Liberty, and finally the Pest railway station located in Hungary. Also, 1889 is the year that he ended his career with a boom as his final structure would be the Eiffel Tower. Eiffel was a great engineer; you do not even have to read his full biography to be able to know that engineering and constructing was a great passion of his. This comes to show how great he was in the engineering world aside from him being well known amongst the world.

On the other hand, I feel as if I relate to Gustave Eiffel because from a young age, I also had an interest in engineering. Though in my case, I am still deciding on which path of engineering I really want to take. All I know is that I am passionate about it in a general perspective, but looking in depth, I am struggling on deciding which career path to take part in. In Eiffel’s case, not only was he an engineer, he was an entrepreneur as well. Furthermore, it is without a doubt that Eiffel enjoyed his time as an engineer, there could have also been times of stress, but you get what you sign up for and I know that being an engineer is not easy or a simple task.

As I aspire to be as great an engineer that Gustave Eiffel there are decisions that I must make to reach that goal or to become an engineer first. I must do well in school and try my absolute hardest, knowing that there will be tough times, I must push through them. I should also take classes that will allow me to learn whatever it is that engineers know how to do and what to do in their future career and endeavors. Finally, I must be able to think like an engineer, because if I cannot, then there would be no point in pursuing that field in which I am interested in.

All in all, I believe that Gustave Eiffel was an outstanding entrepreneur and engineer, he was passionate about constructing and engineering. His projects were astounding, and he is inevitably someone that every engineer should know of because of his accomplishments that also affect others. For instance, the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower are two monuments that are worth seeing in a person’s lifetime despite the distance between the two. It is without a doubt that Alexandre Gustave Eiffel was a great engineer throughout engineering history.

Approximately 50 million Americans eat at fast food restaurants in the United St ...

Approximately 50 million Americans eat at fast food restaurants in the United States daily, and you may count yourself as one. Hopping into your favorite fast-food restaurant or swinging through the drive-thru tends to happen more often than some would like to admit. Crazy statistics have shown that an estimate of twelve percent of children’s calories are consumed from fast food. The consumption of fast food became quite prevalent among not only millennials but families of different ages. This phenomenon has been a habit embedded in many homes. This is where the dangerous part falls; once something becomes a habit it is no longer in one’s control. The person is victimized from prior choices he once made, because each choice starts a behavior that over time becomes a habit. The increased number of fast food consumption is relatively due to its convenience and cheap price. People are relying on budget friendly foods that save them time and fill their stomachs. Compared to the prices of organic food or the ingredients needed to prepare a healthy, nutritious meal at home; fast food purchase is a big save. With today’s busy world, people are also looking for food that satisfies their taste buds and is quickly served to them. This is a great advantage for those who want to save time preparing a home cooked meal or for those who dislike cooking, in the first place. Although fast food could sometimes be a good option in terms of convenience, time, and budget, it still has profound, hideous effects on our body, which will be discussed in this essay.

Get original essay

Fast food consumption has major health risks on the body including physical effects, mental effects, and social effects. Junk food is essentially defined as food that is high in calories, highly processed, and containing low nutritional value. Fast food on the other hand is defined as food that is quickly prepared and eaten. Although fast food could have healthier options, most fast food is classified as junk food. Enjoying fast food often involves shutting out the knowledge that these foods include a lot of processing, modification and horrible ingredients coming from hideous places. Some of the ingredients used in fast include cheaper ingredients such as refined grains, sodium, added sugar, and high fat meat. A healthier option might instead include nutritious ingredients such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats. Because fast food is rich in cholesterol, sodium, saturated, and trans-fat, it is not something to be eaten very often. Research shows that even one single fast-food meal can impact a person’s health. That single fast food meal can cause inflammation to the body, increase in blood pressure, and a quick drop in blood sugar. The drop in blood sugar is due to the consumption of added sugars and high in refined carbohydrates which leads to a surge in insulin. That will leave the person cranky, tired, and hungry for more.

If one-time consumption causes all that, how bad will eating over a long time period be on our body? Just a few days of junk food could actually trigger a person’s metabolism. Their muscles lose the ability to convert glucose into energy even though their calorie intake was maintained constant. Over the long term, this change could lead to the resistance of insulin and eventually type 2 diabetes. Another effect is poor digestion. Because junk food lacks fiber, eating too much of it could lead to constipation. Overall, eating junk food on a regular basis is linked to causing higher risks of digestive issues, heart diseases, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and early deaths. It is quite sad and disturbing as approximately half of American adults eat fast food at least once in seven days. People could sometimes be aware of the detrimental effects of fast food on their physical health. Only does a minority know that this low-quality food can also have harmful effects on the brain and mental health of an individual. Studies say that fast food can really cause mental disorders and fuel depression. Other documented impacts from these foods include mood swings, violence and aggression, anxiety, and brain fog. The situation may be even worse for kids.

The answer easing anxiety and depression is as simple as changing diets. An excess of fast food triggers an inflammatory response in the brain. This inflammation is linked to causing anxiety and depression from past research. Lastly, a poor diet of junk food has been proven detrimental to society. It brings too many negative effects on an individual’s life. “Today more than two of three adults in the United States are considered overweight or obese. More than one-third of children ages six to nine are also considered overweight or obese. The growth of fast food in America seems to coincide with the growth of obesity in the United States.

The Obesity Action Coalition OAC reports that the number of fast food restaurants in America has doubled since 1970. The number of obese Americans has also more than doubled.” Obese people are more susceptible to catch diseases and suffer from low-esteem and social tribulations. As for the American culture, fast food plays a role in creating a society that wants everything now and wants it fast and cheap. Kids, as an example, are excellent demanders. They demand things immediately and parents usually try to please them. However, parents are no different since they are always in search for ways to satisfy the hunger and desire of the whole family with what requires less effort: fast food.

To conclude, families tend to consume fast food on a regular basis as they believe it is more convenient, quicker, cheaper, and easier. However, people are blinded to the unhealthy consequences these foods have on people’s physical, mental, and social health. Food is no longer pure and natural; on the contrary, it is fake and manmade. Restaurants are no longer providing a service but are providing some manufactured, genetically modified goods. The industry is willing to reach every American home with careless thought of what consequences it may face. In order to take action, Dr. Fuhrman says, “We need a revolution in information about our food nutrition and health and it starts with you.”

Introduction

Foods are one of the most important factors in our lives. Everyone needs to eat to survive. Nowadays, everyone has a busier life than ever before. We do not have time to sit back, relax, and spend all day preparing food. But as our world develops, food industries are also developing. As we all know, we now have a new kind of food called “fast food”. Fast food is tasty, cheap, and convenient. They are everywhere, always open, and we can get it by using the drive-thru. Most people, especially in the United States, love fast food. However, despite all the benefits, everyone also knows that fast food is bad for our health, as it causes obesity along with other diseases, and is addictive. That’s why fast food shoud be banned. This essay will discuss how fast food is slowly killing everyone. Would it be acceptable to watch ourselves and our loved ones be killed by fast food?

Why should fast food be banned?

Fast food is undeniably unhealthy and causes obesity. We may consider fast food junk food because it contains high amounts of calories and gives high energy but lacks micronutrients such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and fiber. These foods do not contain the nutrients that your body needs to stay healthy. Even so, people still love fast food. People of all ages can quickly become overweight or obese by eating fast food regularly. Some fast-food does indeed have vegetables in it, for example, a burger would have a piece of lettuce, a slice of tomato, a few pieces of onion, and about two tiny pieces of a pickle. Those vegetables are good for health but the problem here is in the quantity. There are large amounts of carbohydrates and fats in fast food, but there are very little vegetables. It is not nearly enough to sustain our bodies throughout the day. Many may not know how to cook effectively but even simple foods like scrambled eggs, sandwiches, and salads are better than having fries and burgers.

As many of us already know, right now in the States, more than two-thirds of the population is obese. Obesity may affect you not only one’s health but your social status as well. Here in the United States, many people do not care about their appearance. We do not judge or stereotype other people when they are overweight, except for maybe in school, but not in daily life. Doing so may be considered an extremely rude action. However, in other countries, for example where I am from, Thailand, we do stereotype others a lot, mainly based on their appearance. Those who are obese would be looked down. In children, some may even get bullied both verbally and physically for being fat. That is why there are way less obese people in Thailand than in America. Everyone must keep themselves in shape to avoid getting stereotyped by the community.

Many researches have shown that fast food can cause many diseases. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, heart disease and cancer are the biggest causes of death in the United States. Many diseases here are directly associated with food and are preventable with good diet. Cardiovascular disease is usually defined as narrowed blood vessels to the heart by the buildup of plaques inside the arteries. These plaques could end up bursting into the artery and creating a blockage, potentially causing a heart attack (or stroke if it is the blood vessel to the brain). Since fast food contains high cholesterol and promotes obesity, it could cause heart diseases.

Fast food is addictive. “Because fast food and junk food do not contain adequate amounts of protein and good carbohydrates, the blood sugar levels suddenly drop after eating, resulting in grumpy, fatigued feeling and a craving for sugar”. Fast food usually comes with a soda that has a huge amount of sugar in it. Once we drink it, we could feel like having a burst of energy running through our bodies, but that lasts only for a short period of time. Once we get used to eating or drinking sweet, we only want more.

A chef from England, Jamie Oliver, was invited to talk on the show “TED” about food. Oliver claimed that “the adults of the last four generations, have blessed their children with the destiny of a shorter lifespan because of the landscape of food that we’ve built around them.” Children who were born in this generation will literally be growing up with fries, chicken nuggets, burgers, etc. Some of them may never even get try other kinds of food and possible even refuse to do so. When it comes to choosing between fast food and healthy food, all of them would prefer fast food. The question is, what will happen if these children grow up and raise a child of their own? Of course, they will raise their children with fast food as well. Soon, healthy food will be forgotten, and fast food will take over. According to statistics, the obesity rate of people both children and adults has been trending up and will continue this way unless we interrupt it. If we do not do something now, it is like we are killing our children, taking away a huge amount of their precious lifespan by letting them eat whatever their hearts content.

Oliver also gave some stories of people around him whose lives were negatively affected by fast food and obesity. One of them was a sixteen years old girl, Brittany. Brittany had only six years to live. Her live have not even started yet but now she already has a countdown timer of her remaining life. It is heart breaking to know that one live could come to an end so fast.

Another was Stacy, the Edwards family. All the food that Stacy and her family ate was fast food and junk food. Justin, her son, weigh 350 pounds and he is only twelve years old. He gets bullied for being fat. Katie, her daughter, was four years old. She’s obese even before she gets to primary school. Stacy was shocked and depressed after knowing that all fast food and junk food will kill her children early. Stacy said that she wanted her kids to succeed in life but this food is not going to get them there; I am killing them. “The thing is, obesity and diet-related disease doesn’t just hurt the people that have it; it’s all of their friends, families, brothers, sisters.” – Jamie Oliver.

Many people may argue that food is not the only factor for gaining weight. That statement is correct, but according to Matthew Pearce, although the causes of obesity are known to be multi-factorial, a significant amount of evidence suggests that increased energy intake — rather than decreased physical activity — is the main driving force behind the obesity epidemic, particularly amongst lower socioeconomic groups. As long as fast food exists, people will not be able to resist the urge to eat it. Research has shown that we could not out exercise a bad diet. Choice of food is more important than exercise, therefore people would still end up being overweight and unhealthy.

Fast food price is well known for being cheap. That is very true. As of 2019, one burger (only the sandwich) would cost only four to five dollars. But what if someone ended up with cardiovascular disease because of fast food? In that case, we may not be able to say that eating fast food is cheaper anymore. According to the article “The costs of surviving cardiovascular disease: It’s enough to give you a heart attack!”, the cost for up to 90 days of treatment after a stroke is $15,000. For 10 percent of patients, however, the cost during that period reaches $35,000. Some people may have a really good health insurance that covers most of the cost. However, majority of insurance companies will not cover all the cost of the treatment. Among diseases, cardiovascular had one of the highest out-of-pocket medical costs which is about $21,995 per year.

Conclusion

People may view fast food as a modern way of getting food nowadays. It is delicious. It is convenient to buy and to eat. It is cheaper than many other kinds of food. But, as seen from the essay, many researchers have found that fast food is also detrimental to health. Fast food is one of the major causes of obesity. Fast food not only affects the consumer, but also everyone around them. Many have lost their family members due to obesity, many went bankrupt to treat their medical condition related to bad diet. That is why I think we should put a ban on fast food. Fast food can make one happy, but at the same time it can also kill the one.
