What defines a "hero" can vary immensely, depending on whom you ask: some heroes can be veterans who fight for their country, while others can just be common citizens who help and save others. But could someone who survives a risky operation have the qualities of a hero? In the short story “Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keyes, the main protagonist Charlie Gordon, a thirty-seven year old adult with an I.Q. of sixty-eight, takes a life risking operation to triple his I.Q. After the operation when Charlie realizes the after effects that he will soon have, he grows regretful and suicidal feelings. As a result, he grows increasingly regretful and suicidal feelings. Although Charlie Gordon feels hopeless and suicidal, Charlie Gordon possesses heroic qualities because he has seen his fate through Algernon and chooses to accept his fate. In addition, Charlie has the courage to abandon his past and start again in a new environment just so his friends do not have to feel sorry for him. Even if Charlie Gordon did not directly help anyone, he still possesses the qualities of a hero.

For instance, Charlie Gordon takes part in an operation he does not fully understand, but after, he starts to have suicidal thoughts but Charlie has the courage to persevere. “I want to be left to myself. I have become touchy and irritable. [...] Its hard to throw of thoughts of suicide” (533). Charlie’s feelings are very negative, but even then he still tries to fight them off and he states that it is very hard. Instead of crying and giving up, Charlie Gordon is still mindful of how his participation in the operation will help others like him in the future. After the effects of the operation completely wear off, Charlie does not feel sad, instead he feels grateful of what he experiences during his moment of intelligence, even for a fleeting moment. “If you ever read this Miss Kinnian dont be sorry for me Im glad I got a second chanse to be smart becaus I lerned a lot of things that I never even new were in this world and Im grateful that I saw it all for a littel bit.” Even though Charlie experiences all the pain and suffering, he still feels grateful for what he still has despite the amount. Other than focusing on what he has lost, Charlie concentrates on how he will grow from his previous experiences. Charlie Gordon is a very kind and extremely thoughtful man, he does not have a single bit of negativity in him.

Charlie is heroic because he has the courage to start anew in an unfamiliar environment where all sorts of people can belittle and insult him, just so everyone he knows do not have to feel sympathy about his condition “I dont want Miss Kinnian to feel sorry for me. Evry body feels sorry at the factory and I dont want that eather…” (538). Charlie is very considerate of other people’s feelings; he does not want them to feel sorry or guilty about himself. He loves and cares about all the people from his past and is willing to sacrifice himself into a new world just so they do not have to feel bad about anything. Charlie also knows how to defend himself against bullies when they insult him; he does so without harming them, as seen from his progress reports. “I told myself Charlie if they make fun of you dont get sore because you remember their not so smart as you once thot they were once your friends and if they laughed at you that doesnt mean anything because they liked you too” (536). Here, Charlie reassures himself that he does not need to fight back when his friends insult him. Instead, he tells himself that those who laugh at him "[are] not so smart as [Charlie] once thot they were" and so they have no reason to mock him. A mindset such as this shows how thoughtful Charlie is. Instead of openly criticizing his bullies, he raises his own confidence and self-esteem.

Some may argue that Charlie Gordon is an absent minded man that accidentally did something for science and may even call Charlie a coward for running from his past life. He never knew what he was getting himself into until after his intelligence triples from the operation. “Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur have asked me not to come to the lab any more. I know what they’re thinking, but I can’t accept it” (531). If Charlie Gordon realizes the risks and aftereffects of the operation before the doctors perform it,, he would never choose to participate. Charlie Gordon finally understands what he has gotten himself into and cannot accept what is going to happen to him. In order to have heroic qualities you must understand what you are risking and sacrificing and for whom in order to actually have the bravery and courage of a hero.

Although this way of thinking has logic, it does not take in the whole picture. The same evidence can support the completely opposite side if all points are taken into consideration.“Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur have asked me not to come to the lab any more. I know what they’re thinking, but I can’t accept it” (531). Even if Charlie does not fully understand the operation, he adapts to the situation he finds himself in after and bears the hardships. Charlie Gordon states that he cannot accept it, but in the end he ends up persevering and continuing his research to help other mentally disabled people like himself. Despite his condition, Charlie continues to care for everyone around him, even those who ridicule him.Charlie Gordon carries heroic qualities because he has the will the adapt to and fix any situation, no matter how difficult. He may feel suicidal and hopeless because of the operation, but he still persists in the research to help people who are mentally disabled. Charlie also has courage to abandon his past just so his friends do not have to feel sympathetic about his mental and emotional state.

Charlie is not a typical hero. He may not have superhuman strength or supernatural skills, but he cares immensely about people. He is thoughtful of people's feelings, which is what makes Charlie a definite hero. Charlie Gordon was a hero in his very own way just as we all are every time we do something kind for each other. Everyone, from children to adults, even those with low cognitive abilities can really do something great for many people’s individual/personal view of the world, even if its something small such as kindness it has the potential to completely change someone’s view of the world.

We are all chasing our own fish. We're all trying desperately to grasp something that is just out of our reach. For Santiago, the main character in Hemingway's The Old Man and The Sea, he is chasing a literal fish. He exhibits exceptional amounts of patience towards this fish - as one must when pursuing an important goal - spending eighty-four uneventful days at sea in hopes of finally snagging the monster. Santiago sacrifices his physical and mental stability whilst in pursuit of his ultimate goal, and if one looks at the bigger picture, Kicking Bird of Dances with Wolves does the same. But, in order to compare the ultimate goals of the main characters, we must first deduce what Kicking Bird’s “fish" is. What is it that keeps slipping for his clutches?

Some could argue that Kicking Bird's metaphorical "fish" is the white man, that he is constantly yearning to understand their customs and way of life. This would explain his inquisitiveness and interest toward Lieutenant Dunbar throughout the book. Though this is sound reasoning, I would argue against it. If Kicking Bird's "fish" is the white man, then he would have caught it long ago when he adopted Stands With A Fist into his family. Kicking Bird would have been given the opportunity to examine the white customs first hand - however limited they were - from Stands With A Fist when she was younger and not fully assimilated into the Sioux culture yet. Kicking Bird isn't wanting to only understand the white man's way of life and customs, but his motives as well. He wants to fully understand why the white man is pioneering through the Sioux Lands, and what it is they are hoping to accomplish by doing so. By analyzing the book and Kicking Bird’s actions throughout, one could come to the conclusion that Kicking Bird's "fish" is the understanding of the white man's incentive.

When compared side-by-side, Santiago's and Kicking Bird's behavior towards their respective "fish" are nearly identical. Just as Santiago tolerates the marlin's antics - regardless of how frustrating they may be - Kicking Bird is incredibly patient with the antics of Lieutenant Dunbar. Towards the beginning of Dances With Wolves, Kicking Bird observes a far more patient attitude towards Dunbar than others in the tribe. An example of such behavior appears when the Lieutenant tries to convey the word "buffalo" despite the language barrier. Instead of deeming Dunbar crazy for rolling around in the dirt and trying to leave like Wind In His Hair, Kicking Bird sits quietly and tries to decipher the meaning behind Dunbar's makeshift skit. Kicking Bird also takes it upon himself to help the other members of the tribe teach Dunbar the Sioux language, a monotonous task that requires an extensive amount of patience. Why would Kicking Bird take on such a tedious task if it is not to gain what he is seeking, if it isn't to catch his "fish?"

Kicking Bird believes that being civil with Dunbar will help him build up a trust with the Lieutenant, and forging such trust would finally allow Kicking Bird to ask what it is that the white man wants so badly from the Sioux land. Later on in the book, Kicking Bird comes extremely close to broaching the topic with Dunbar. He asks the Lieutenant how many white men will be passing through the Sioux land, and the answer Dunbar gives is a very ominous "like the stars." Though Kicking Bird’s long-standing question is partially answered with how many white men are coming, he is still unaware of the reason behind the white man's actions. He is still in pursuit of that aspect of his "fish."

Both Santiago and Kicking Bird sacrificed much for their “fish." They both relinquish parts of their lives to pursue their ultimate goals, and some of their actions yield harsh consequences. Santiago nearly dies of dehydration, and is forced to cope with the cuts in his palms and the cramps in his shoulders from fighting with the marlin for three days and three nights. Kicking Bird has to deal with the condemning attitudes of numerous tribe members regarding his acceptance of Dunbar. Both men finally made it to shore, so to speak; Santiago made it back to his home - however empty-handed - and Kicking Bird was no longer ridiculed for his fondness of Dunbar. Although both survived their respective chase, both essentially became the pursuit of their "fish," and in the end, neither truly caught it.

Polio Virus and its strategic tool

Poliomyelitis is a life-threatening disease which can cause disability. It is caused by virus called “poliovirus”. This virus spreads from one infected person to another person infecting a person’s spinal cord. An infected person becomes paralyzed and cannot move parts of their body. An infected person may or may not show visible symptoms. Some of the other symptoms includes: Sore throat, Fever, Tiredness, Nausea, Headache, and Stomach pain which can last for about a week and go away on their own. Serious cases of infected people develop more serious symptoms that affect their nervous system and spinal cord causing the following: Paresthesia- Infected person feels like they have pins/needles in the legs. Meningitis- Infection of spinal cord/brain occurring in 1 out of 25 people affected with poliovirus. Paralysis- Infected person loses reflex senses and cannot move their body parts. It is the deadliest one as person becomes disable permanently and dies eventually. The virus affects the muscles that help in respiration and deteriorates it. Children who show the disappearance of the symptoms also develop new muscle pain/weakness as they grow up in 15 or 40 years later. This stage is called Post-polio syndrome.

Poliovirus can be transmitted into the body through the mouth and can be spread through a person coming in contact with the feces of an infected person or if a person inhales droplet from the sneeze or cough of an infected person. Virus resides in the throat and intestine of an infected person and proves to be very contagious. People get infected with poliovirus if they do not clean their hands after using the restroom or touch objects like toys that are contaminated by feces. This was usually observed in developing countries where hygiene was the major point of concern. The transmitted virus can remain in the feces of an infected person for weeks and can affect another healthy person if they come in contact.

In the early stages of vaccine development, two different types of vaccines were introduced against Poliovirus which were: Inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) has been used in the United States since 2000, and the oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) which is used throughout the world. IPV was developed by Jonas Salk and licensed in 1955. It was a mixture of killed virus which had the ability to induce an antibody-medicated response that stopped the virus from spreading to the nervous system however it did not prevent an immune person from carrying and spreading the poliovirus to others through the fecal-oral route. Moreover, the vaccine was way too expensive than OPV and needed two doses least. Whereas OPV developed by Albert Sabin and approved in 1960 contained live, attenuated wild poliovirus. These were further classified into trivalent oral poliovirus (tOPV) which had weakened live virus for all three strains 1,2 and 3. Monovalent OPVs had the ability to induce an immune response to one strain of virus but had a higher rate of seroconversion than tOPV. OPV doses were administered by untrained volunteers easily but were very potent and sensitive. An infected person was considered fully recovered from polio after receiving three doses of OPV but there was a risk that the virus would relapse to its virulent type strain and can cause paralysis. In April 2016, 155 countries replaced tOPV by the Bivalent Oral poliovirus vaccine (bPOV). Polio type 2 got eradicated in 1955 by usage of tOPV but types 1 and 3 began to show increased cases again in 2007 in India, Nigeria, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

During these tough times, it was observed that mOPV vaccines reduced type 1 cases but there was an increase in the number of type 3 cases. This relapse and co-circulation of type 1 and type 3 cases of polio virus often required supplementary changes in the immunization activities which involved interchangeability of tOPV, mOPV1, and mOPV2. People injected with tOPV showed a lower immune response when compared to people injected with mOPV. In order to tackle this issue, Dr Walter Orenstein, former director of United Stated Immunization program and WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) came up with the idea of a Bivalent vaccine (bOPV) which will contain type 1 and 3 serotypes. There was no safety and efficacy data for bOPV due to which regulatory authorities were speculating whether the vaccine is safe to use for type 1 polio type in place of mOPV.

Advisory Committee for Polio, an independent technical oversight body of GPEI in Nov 2007, recommended that bOPV will be 80% efficacious as mOPV1 and mOPV3 when it comes to seroconversion. They also recommended to conduct accelerated clinical trial considering the urgency. De novo was not necessary to be submitted as bOPV was formulated from the same formulation as tOPV due to which clinical trial directly was passed to phase III. Cochi and Sutter estimated USD 11.5 million to USD 52.9 million for the clinical trial. WHO Research and Product development team helped in trials.

The trials were conducted in India after taking approval to use drug licensure only for data collected in India by the Drug Controller General of India and the Indian National Regulatory Authority. Panacea Biotech based in India who had compliance with Good Clinical Practice guidelines and national laws was selected by WHO to be responsible for supply and monitoring activities of the trials. Blood and stool samples were analyzed at Enterovirus Research Centre in Mumbai which was a part of Global Polio Lab network. WHO started visiting around 10 hospitals to select study sites and informed India’s National Ministry of Health and local state health ministries about the trial. Clinical trial was completed in 5 months by Dec 2008 which had 178 infants enrolled in it. Dr, Harish Verma saw the reports, reviewed them and stated that bOPV was better at protecting children against types 1 and 3 than tOPV and it provides similar protection as offered by mOPV. After this, the production of vaccines increased tremendously and the WHO vaccine prequalification team, WHO Essential Medicines and Health Products department, and their National Regulatory authorities in collaboration with Panacea and UNICEF, and GPEI helped in getting product into the market. National Licensure for bOPV was offered to five manufacturers: Panacea, Haffkine, Bharat Serums and Vacines, Sanofi Pasteur and GSK. A recent survey stated that type 2 poliovirus had been eradicated in 2015, and type 3 had not been detected since 2012.

bOPV vaccine pathway: Research to Marketing

In 1988, the WHO governing body, the World Health Assembly, resolved to eliminate polio worldwide by 2000. However, the smallest possibility/risk of prevalence of wild poliovirus and vaccine-associated paralysis in or close contact with vaccine recipients through the doses of tOPV was a loophole in the complete eradication of poliomyelitis. Hence, a rise in the plateau of wild polio I and III by 2007 in major areas of 4 countries: Afghanistan, Nigeria, Pakistan, and India, gave an urge to develop bivalent OPV vaccine as a supplementary immunization schedule for the eradication of Polio in contrast to tOPV as a routine immunization schedule. WHO experts address the way to eradicate both serotypes at a time through bOPV. However, the challenge lies in proving the safe and effective standards of the bOPV vaccine without data as the national regulatory authorities (NRA’s) —the bodies evaluating the product quality, safety, and efficacy requirements- were reluctant to introduce bOPV without proper results.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) advisory committee advised conducting a clinical trial to quality bOPV for at least 80 percent as effective as mOPV1 and mOPV3 for seroconversion. In the given crisis, WHO decided to maximize the time and money required to expedite, or fast-track, the normal pathway of research and development through a plan to test the formulation directly into phase III, as the formulation of bOPV was same as tOPV, by removing the component mOPV2. Hence, the need to provide de novo proof of vaccine safety, no longer remain the necessity.

Before its 1990s collapse, India was the most affected developing country with polio and has also been the pioneer-leader in polio science-epidemiology, vaccine prevention- and in both OPV and IPV development. Moreover, the ongoing flow of both Type I and Type III wild poliovirus in India, existing facilities, infrastructure, and placed regulatory bodies made India an ideal location for the clinical trials of bOPV phase III trial. Additionally, the higher cost of conducting the phase III trials, the requirement for approval of the vaccine, for the data collected only in India, and the easy addition of bOPV arm along with tOPV and mOPV evaluation attracted India as a location for trial.

Soon after the evaluation of bOPV as the tool to eradicate polio through clinical results, the committee of WHO expeditated the manufacturing and campaign. Vaccine manufacturers were shared with the campaign schedule, outlining when and on what scale bOPV will be carried out, with projections for a two-year vaccine supply. A regulatory paper was prepared on bOPV, explaining the non-requirement of comprehensive clinical trials and the appropriateness of the Indian non-inferiority trial to authorize the licensure of drugs for various UN agencies. The WHO Department of Essential Medicines and Health Products worked closely with countries and their National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) to encourage accessible, reliable, safe, and efficient access to medicines, diagnostics, and products.

Vaccine Pricing

The pricing of vaccines is a dynamic, multidimensional matter. Various purchasing factors may affect the price of vaccines, such as procurement process and size, procurement methodology, and contract terms. Generally speaking, vaccine manufacturers follow their own strategies to charge higher vaccine prices in wealthier countries while holding rates lower for countries that are unable to afford the prices on the open market and supported by donors. Advanced market commitments (AMCs) tool strategy where donors provide assistance of funding to vaccine manufacturers and, in return, firms sign a legal agreement to distribute the vaccines to low- and middle-income countries at an affordable price, plays an important role in COVID-19 response.

Vaccines obtained through the program should be free for priority segments of the population at the point of nationwide care, with national allocations assessed by a fair and rational process. For example, the initial doses should go first to health workers and uncontrolled epidemic countries, then to old age and vulnerable populations, and finally to the entire population.

The need for concerted global action

Vaccines can be effective weapons to prevent future outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases from transforming into humanitarian crises. The availability of COVID-19 vaccines is therefore not just a scientific challenge. Past health crises, such as the polio epidemic in the 1990s, the 2009 swine flu pandemic, and the 2014 West African Ebola epidemic demonstrated that organizing globally coordinated action can still be challenging.

Developing and producing a COVID-19 vaccine in 12-18 months on a global scale requires immediate concerted action from governments, foundations, academics, industry, and multilateral and global health collaborations. All involved stakeholders should do everything possible to reduce the timelines for vaccine development and to contribute collectively to ending the pandemic.

The documentary, “Chasing the Moon”, date made is unknown but aired on July 10, 2019. This documentary was a three part event that covered the space race and the politics of space involved during the 1970’s. The documentary aimed to portray the meticulous political calculation, visionary impulses and personal drama of everyone during the peak of the space age. This was all done while reconstructing the tensions that the United States, Russia and the rest of the world were experiencing during the edgy period of the cold war.

Chasing the Moon does a really good job in expressing the significance of this monumental moment in our history. It does so by giving the viewers primary sources form journalists that covered the space race from the very beginning; whilst using first hand news coverage of people and events during the 1970. Their emotional description were filled with marvel and admiration through the very beginning of the film. This created a captivating immersive experience throughout the film. The documentary also explains the importance of the man who kept America vigilant with his tense history but also advanced the United States during the space race, “Wernher von Braun”. All of these perfectly illustrated the significance of this historical event through mainly personal experience.

The documentary does an exceptional job in convincing its audience its information was correct and accurate. It gives only primary visual depictions of the actual historical events from the 1970’s such as news clips from NBC news, radio broadcast, presidential or political speeches. All while, firsthand experienced journalist, narrate and explains all of these events that unfolded during the era of space exploration. Secondary sources historians, John Logsdon and Roger Launius unraveled the complicated meaning of the politics of space. The film devotes lengthy segments of the documentary with excerpts from 1960, Columbia pictures “I aim at the Stars”. Which is used as a secondary source to emphasize Wernher Von Braun’s tense past.

One of the historians John Logsdon narrates most of the documentary alongside other historians. John Logsdon is the Director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University and was former member of the NASA Advisory Council. Giving Logsdon strong ethos within in the field of this documentary as a historian. Logsdon claimed in the documentary that during the space age the Kennedy administration was very media conscious. Ultimately televising and radio broadcasting everything that occurred during his time in office. This claim was also made in an article by Logsdon titled “John F. Kennedy’s Space Legacy and Its Lessons for Today”.

Chasing the moon was without a doubt an eye opening documentary to watch. Reminding viewers about the significance of the space race even during the most complex of times. The rivalry between two countries was portrayed perfectly and gave their sense of urgency. The use of old live news coverage and personal interviews gave the film a really nice edge in absorbing viewer’s interest. This gave the documentary a real advantage by producing credible, legitimate feelings and thoughts that were experienced during this period.

My thought on the three part documentary is that it holds value and portrays the significance very well. Everyone should always be reminded about the time the entire world unified itself to but a man on the moon.

A person can become a Chef from as young as 15 years old. The occupation is done by an apprenticeship, or a traineeship that takes time off an apprenticeship for later on. An apprenticeship is a 4 year course but depending on if a traineeship or other qualifications have been done by the Chef, it can take time off an apprenticeship. Qualifications are very important for Chefs because with those qualifications, a person can go anywhere.

In becoming a Chef, there is not only one job level to the job, there is many levels or positions a Chef can be. The head Chef (Chef De Cuisine) is the main Chef or in other words the manager of the kitchen. It is the Head Chefs job to sort out menus, sort out tasks for the other chefs, the roster of the chefs, order food supply, prepare meals and trains apprentices. The Sous Chef is the second in charge. The Sous Chefs job is to help other cooks, report any issues to Head Chef and fills in when the Head Chef is absent. The rest of the Chefs can be classified as Cooks as they are the ones mainly doing all the cooking and prepping. Salaries of a Chef can vary depending on region, food service and level of the Chef. On average a Chef can receive between $38,000 – $60,000 per year, averaging around $22.25 an hour. In any Kitchen, it is important to have different jobs because kitchens can be a very stressful place and with different jobs at different levels, it makes the kitchen a whole lot easier.

Most Chefs have amazing benefits to their job including bonuses and travel. Around 70% of Chefs reported receive health care benefits that will help throughout their whole career and beyond. Over half the population of Chefs being reported receive medical care and dental care, and around a third of the population of Chefs reported also receive vision care. In most restaurants and food services, Chefs receive free food and drink while working. Receiving a qualification in Cookery can take an individual person around the World in any type of place.
