Abortion causes death, it is true that each individual are the master of their own body but it doesn’t include the right to destroy others life it might result to your own end. According to a research in countries where abortion is legal, one in every 15 women dies after abortion. This are the result of either medical abortion or antibiotic abortion, nearly there are 200 women die because or abortion these proves that abortion is dangerous either you go to a licensed doctor or to a “mang hihilot”. This tells us that the legalization of abortion doesn’t prove that it is safe even if you go to a licensed doctor or to a “mang hihilot” the equipment they have can’t help you as you emerge it is the mother’s decision. There is still a risk associated with miscarriage with the legalization of abortion and then continuing the pregnancy and let the fetus the gift of God freely live.

Whereas not every person like their jobs, jobs help us grow as a person given that jobs teach us new experiences. As in my own experience, the job I worked at taught me a lot. In Franklin’s experience, we see how the job is not as pleasant as he wishes. Since we began reading the essay, we realize that Franklin is looking for a job. It is not until later that we realize that he does not want that job. It is not something that makes him feel proud. Although it is an achievement, is not one that can be said aloud. In comparison to his job, when I was working as a secretary I didn’t feel embarrassed at all because it was a job that I could actually enjoy and learn from. Whereas Franklin feels embarrassed and uncomfortable because he is working on such a lowly job. He has the ability to work at a better job due to his high qualifications. Franklin is confronted by a man who asks him about his job, but he can't tell him anything because he is very self-conscious as he states, "I want to tell him that I'm in the top 5 percent of students at my college, that I am two semesters away from graduating, and that I'm on my way to grad school to get a Ph.D. in English literature." (27)

Throughout the rest of the essay, Joey keeps telling us about the reasons of his coworkers who are working there. One of them is there to be out of jail, another because of the need to pay bills, and another applied because she knew she was going to get hired. Joey's reason is that he has to do it for the welfare of the family. "There is food in the fridge, and I have a job that pays an honest wage." (30) In comparison to his experience, in the office I was working at my coworkers where there to actually make money and help themselves be better at their job. They weren’t there just to stay out of jail or situations like that.

Consequently with my experience, I had a job that paid good money. I was working as a secretary it wasn't my dream job, but I had to do it for my own good. I needed money and also I wanted to feel the experience of working and getting money for myself, without the need to ask my parents for money all the time. I had to learn the way of doing things in the office. If I didn't do that, I would be like Joey and his job. As when Danny asked him to cover for him, Joey didn't know how to do the sandwiches in a fast way as Danny. Therefore, he was already predicting that he was going to fail and not do such a good job. The same would have happened to me, if I didn't learn how to file documents and make phone calls to schedule an appointment.

I agree with the author in the sense that sometimes we have to do a thing because we have to, even if we don't want to. We won't always get the job we dream of having, but at the end it is going to be worth it and it will teach us new things as well. For example how to deal with coworkers and their different situations as Franklin did and as I did in my experience. It’s true that we don’t always like our jobs but at the end of the day we have to do our best to get what we want.

You might feel sore, worn out, and even discouraged. Just like critical thinking, the first day is tough. It might be difficult to analyze topics without including your own beliefs. Just like exercising, with practice and time critical thinking becomes part of a routine. Paul and Elder (2012) argue, “The greatest thinkers make the study of thinking second nature” (pg. 10). My goal is to make critical thinking a habit in order to reach fair-minded thinking. This essay will assess my own critical thinking and how HUM 101 impacted my thinking.

Strategic Thinking

Critical thinking can be applied to all aspects of life. Whether I am at school, work, or communicating with friends I can practice critical thinking. Critical thinking requires examination of your own thinking, identification of weaknesses in thinking, and reconstructing your thinking (Paul and Elder, 2011). In order to grow as a thinker, you must be able to identify which type of thinker you are and plan for future growth.

When I first started this class, I did not practice critical thinking in all aspects of life. For example, I would apply fair-minded thinking at work and school but not incorporate it into my everyday life. Practicing fair-minded thinking and identifying fallacies in my own assumptions, has allowed me to grow as a thinker. I now try to incorporate critical thinking into all aspects of life. In the first week of this class, I considered myself a beginning thinker. Similar to other beginners, I was trying to improve but without regular practice. I had to force myself to think in disciplined ways. (Paul & Elder, 2012). Identifying the type of thinker I was allowed me to become a stronger thinker. I now consider myself a practice thinker because I recognize the necessity of practicing critical thinking regularly.

Myself as a practicing thinker. Paul and Elder (2012) state, “The only way to move from beginning thinker to practicing thinker is to commit yourself to daily practice in thinking well and design your own plan for practice” (pg. 5). Creating a critical thinking journal has encouraged me to improve my thinking. I write down thoughts daily, and respond to the “Think for Yourself” prompts in the textbook. I then can utilize my journal to plan practice for the future.

Future growth. In the future, I will continue to utilize my critical thinking journal. This will allow me to monitor my thinking and plan for future growth. I plan to apply critical thinking to all aspects of life such as college, work, and my career. Research shows that educators, administrators, legislators and educators value critical thinking in learning and education (Geertsen, 2013). In order for me to reach my marketing career goals, I must be able to think critically. Being a critical thinker will also make me stand out from other potential applicants. Ultimately, being a true fair-minded thinker is my goal. In order to be a true fair-minded thinker I must identifying egocentrism tendencies in my thinking and practice ethical reasoning. Ethical reasoning requires ignoring selfish desires and doing what is right (Paul and Elder, 2009). I must be able to be unbiased in my thinking to become a true fair-minded thinker. This will allow me to succeed in college and my career.

HUM 101 impacted my thinking. To put it simply, HUM 101 taught me the importance of applying critical thinking to all aspects of life. Previously, I did not realize the importance of critical thinking. This class taught me identifying my own fallacies, generalizations, and bias assumptions will enable me to grow as a thinker. HUM 101 also taught me critical thinking is an ongoing process and there is not a single solution to achieve critical reasoning. This class could be improved by providing more exercises that require students to use critical thinking in the real-world. For example, if the critical thinking journal was mandatory to turn in a few times throughout the semester, students would be practicing their skills daily. I overall learned the importance of critical thinking from this class and think it was a success.

Conclusion

In conclusion, critical thinking can be practiced in all aspects of life and is an ongoing process like exercising. HUM 101 gave me the tools I need in order to grow as a critical thinker. Identifying fallacies, weaknesses, biasedness in my thinking will allow me to grow as a thinker. Practicing daily is crucial to be a true critical thinker. Overall, I have learned what type of thinker I am, and have a plan to grow as a critical thinker.

The U.S. economy had been crippled severely and was in dire need of economic stimulation. As he campaigned, Franklin D. Roosevelt metaphorically proclaimed that the American people were in need of a new deal, one in which that would restore their faith in the United States. When FDR took the Oval Office, he setout passing massive legislations. President Roosevelt’s objectives were simple and clear.

His first goal was to restore consumer confidence within the banking system. His second goal was to reduce the level of unemployment and poverty. These series of legislative acts and executive orders passed by FDR and Congress became famously known as the New Deal. Indisputably, the New Deal worked, creating a more sustainable and harmonious economy.

His message was that individualism must make way for collective action. The ideological liberalism that has allowed for the U.S. economy to spiral out of control through its commendation of free market enterprise and lack of government intervention must come to a halt.

“Some of my friends tell me that they do not want the Government in business. With this I agree; but I wonder whether they realize the implications of the past. For while it has been American doctrine that the government must not go into business in competition with private enterprises, still it has been traditional particularly in Republican administrations for business urgently to ask the government to put at private disposal all kinds of government assistance. The same man who tells you that he does not want to see the government interfere in business—and he means it, and has plenty of good reasons for saying so—is the first to go to Washington and ask the government for a prohibitory tariff on his product. “ (Franklin Roosevelt, Commonwealth Club Address)

Franklin Roosevelt acknowledged that the lack of regulation, especially in the banking industry contributed to the poor economic conditions of the Great Depression. When he took office in 1933, that March, President Roosevelt proclaimed a Bank Holiday, shutting down the banking system. This put an end to the bank runs consumers were making on U.S. banks. FDR understood the importance of the financial system to the economy. Although he wanted to regulate it, he knew he must restore consumer confidence in the financial system and their government. On March 13th, when the institutions reopened for business depositors stood in line to return their cash to their neighborhood banks. Before two weeks had even passed, Americans had redeposited more than half of the currency that they had hoarded prior to the suspension. Even the stock market was suspended and recorded the largest one-day percentage increase once reopened. Franklin D Roosevelt knew in order to jumpstart the economy he had to build the American people’s confidence in the institutions. Thus, it was ironic when businessmen were calling for less government intervention, when it was government intervention that solved the Great Depression.

During a speech he gave while on campaign for reelection, he metaphorically referred to the private sector as a train that has gone off the rails. He states that this train did not uplift itself out of the ditch but was hauled out by the Government. This strong message had to have been reassuring to the citizens of United States. With FDR leading the United States Government, deflation and falling prices ceased, industrial workers had more purchasing power, interest rates, power rates, and transportation rates were reduced, the rate of unemployment rate and poverty even fell.

These things happened because of a strong central government that sought to create fair conditions for the public. Under FDR, social welfare programs were immense and life changing. For example, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a public work relief program that operated for unemployed, unmarried men from relief families as part of the New Deal. Also the Works Progress Administration (renamed in 1935 as the Work Projects Administration; WPA) was the largest and most ambitious American New Deal agency, employing millions of unemployed people to carry out work to be done in the public sector, mainly infrastructure. Millions of dollars were injected into the economy through the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, liquidating the assets of the closed banks. Millions of dollars were pumped into the economy through the Federal Housing Program, which loaned money out to finance and build homes. This sort of public expenditure allowed money to circulate once again. The government spending on social welfare for the public put money into circulation for the economy to spend itself.

President Roosevelt felt that it was his administration’s duty to combat this increase in income inequality and save American democracy, against the abuse of concentration of economic power that had been insidiously growing up among us in the past fifty years. FDR even recalled a warning of one of the Founding Fathers, Thomas Jefferson. President Jefferson forewarned that increasing poverty with a large concentration of wealth couldn’t sustain side by side in a democracy.

However after World War II, it did not take too long for entrepreneurs to revert back to their desire to limit the government. In fact, many of them thought the government should only intervene as a last resort when the economy cannot be stimulated through the private sector. This allowed for classical liberalism to revive itself. While some liberals (welfare liberals) came to embrace the government for its growth promoting, economy-managing and its concern for social welfare, there were a minority (corporate liberals) that evolved into an anti-state faction within the conservative party that only wanted growth. “As government became more responsive to political movements for reform, conservatives became more suspicious of government while liberals became more attracted to it.” (American Political Thought) Another dilemma arose from this division amongst liberals, and that is whether the have-nots were entitled to a large share of economic opportunities and wealth.

There grew a huge resentment for the focus the nation had placed on social welfare. Daniel Bell, sociologist wrote a booked titled The End of Ideology arguing that the material benefits of modern capitalism had been so widely shared that, the nation had solved all the major economic issues between classes or groups of people. Therefore, suggesting for a reemergence of a free market enterprise. Ultimately meaning, the government had done its job and can go away until needed. By the 1980s, the neoliberal ideology had fully revived itself, especially with Milton Friedman, free-market economist serving as an advisor to president Reagan. It is hard to fathom, how the neoliberalism can thrive when there is empirical and historical data showing that the government’s involvement in the economy creates a sustainable and stable market environment. As public expenditure increases it serves as spending money for the people and businesses within the economy. As long as neoliberalism remains the dominant ideology in the U.S. income inequality will only continue increase. Therefore, it serves as a threat to the bottom middle-class and lower-class citizens of society.

An Emergency Management Coordinator has to create plans such as mitigation, and how to prepare the community for a potential catastrophe. Successful emergency management requires specialized skills. EMCs help communities by assessing potential hazards and training emergency response teams, they also work together with government entities that deal with cleanup efforts and medical aid after a natural disaster, hazardous accident or terrorist attack has occurred. As society has become more integrated, those skills include coordinating an increasingly complex array of organizations, resources and personnel. Add to this the high expectations that citizens tend to place on emergency mangers, and the challenge can seem very overwhelming.

Now that we have a basic understanding of who and what an Emergency Management Coordinator is I want to take a look at the realities of their duties in the face of disaster/emergency situations. Whether they may be faced with hurricanes, earthquakes or bomb threats, emergency management coordinators (EMCs) must assess the situation quickly, brainstorm possible solutions and delegate duties accordingly.   • Supervises, coordinates, and maintains the daily operations of the local Emergency Management Agency (EMA).
  • Maintains the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in a continuous state of readiness.
  • Maintains coordination with local and state governmental departments and agencies, utilities and industry during any type of emergency.
  • Prepares and revises the county Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
  • Assists local government departments/agencies in the preparation of the departments SOPs in support of the EOP.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations to businesses, industry, hospital, and nursing homes on the preparation of their emergency plans to ensure they are workable within the framework of the local and state plans.
  • Develops and coordinates mutual aid agreements with other agencies and adjacent counties.
  • Prepares and manages the local EMA budget.
  • Prepares the required budget and staffing patterns paperwork for GEMA, which qualifies the local EMA for GEMA and FEMA funds.
  • Organizes and coordinates local training for public safety and volunteer first responders.
  • Supervises and monitors the actions of the Volunteer Search and Recovery Squad.
  • Prepares scenarios and procedures and coordinates training for local government officials, industry, utilities, and volunteers in conjunction with the exercising of emergency plans.
  • Ensures the EOC is staffed with knowledgeable qualified personnel and makes training and exercises available to these personnel. Through newspaper articles, radio programs, television, speaking engagements, and seminars, makes the public aware of the emergency plans and procedures that are in place and the public's part in making these plans and procedures work.
  • Working with the Red Cross and DFACS, ensures that adequate facilities are available to shelter citizens should the need arise.
  • Coordinates with the school system officials for the development of tornado warnings and school shelter plans.
  • On a 24 hour basis, responds to hazardous material incidents, bomb threats, severe weather alerts, and other natural or man-made emergencies.
  • Manages the daily operations of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) and answers citizen inquiries concerning hazardous materials.
  • Responds to water and land search and recovery efforts utilizing the EMA Volunteer Search and Recovery Squad.
  • Interprets and applies all federal and state directives that apply to emergency management and departments supporting EMA.
  • Answers inquiries from citizens concerning emergency plans and procedures.
  • Ensures that all special needs citizens, registered with the Department of Health, are evacuated if the need arises. Also coordinates the transportation needs of the nursing homes.
  • Utilizing computer models and various weather service products, stays abreast of current weather conditions and advises city/county administrators and/or department heads of any action that may be needed.

The amount of responsibility that and EMC has is pretty substantial, and it is because of them that when disaster strikes we have the ability to get the help and services that re needed to start the processing of cleaning up and rebuilding. Because of the importance of this position I believe that the individual tasked with having to develop emergency plans has to be one of focus and drive with the best interest of the community at heart. But other than having a focus and drive there are other qualities that make for a really good EMC. "One of the most essential qualities an emergency manager must have is professionalism. According to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) training, professionalism is imperative because emergency managers must work with a wide variety of people to coordinate, organize and get things done in a crisis situation. They must treat other people fairly and kindly, and find the balance between cordiality and a sense of urgency. Emergency managers must also be able to have empathy but follow the rules and federal guidelines regarding emergency assistance" (FEMA).

Another important quality is to have great communication and organizational skills. "Being a great listener is also important so that they may quickly understand all the facts pertaining to an emergency situation, and be able to efficiently communicate and delegate tasks to subordinates and community leaders. This may also entail using a wide variety of communication mediums appropriately and effectively. These types of leaders must perform well in high-stress situations, and remain calm at all times. This is not an ideal position for someone who loses his temper quickly. Along with the essential professional and personal qualities, the emergency manager must understand and be proficient at the actual management activities. For example, he must plan and coordinate the emergency procedures with local contacts, such as the police and fire department. He must also know the process of contacting state or national officials for more help if necessary. Other types of emergency management activities include working with weather bureaus, transportation authorities and criminal law agencies," (EHow).

The way an EMC responds to a disaster is highly dependent upon the source of the disaster and the level of damage it has caused. Natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods or hurricanes, demand actions and solutions vastly different from those caused by warfare. Spills of toxic or hazardous materials or nuclear power plant malfunctions require different approaches to minimize negative effects. No one disaster will be entirely the same as another, so the response may not be able to be handled them same way.

The key concept of an EMC is PPRR which stands for:

Prevention/Mitigation- Assessing and reducing disaster risks. Activities include researching natural and 'man-made' disasters, constructing physical mitigation works (such as levees and firebreaks), establishing warning systems, land use planning (e.g. stopping people from building on floodplains) and building codes (e.g. mandating fire-proof building materials). Preparedness- Preparing the emergency services and the community ready for disasters. Activities include preparing emergency plans, training first responders, educating the community on how to prepare and what to do in a disaster. Response- Actually responding to a disaster and ensuring that the emergency services have the right resources (equipment and people) to do their job. Emergency management professionals aren't usually in charge of responding to a disaster, but act as an executive officer, providing expert advice to someone with the decision making authority Recovery- Getting a community that has been impacted by a disaster 'back on its feet'. Activities include, collecting and distributing donations and goods, distributing government relief payments, assisting with reconstruction tasks and much more.

There is no single model for emergency management, either in organization or in size. Nationwide, there is great variety. For example, emergency management may function as a separate organization. In an ideal situation, the emergency manager answers directly to the jurisdiction's chief executive, giving the executive direct access to unfiltered information from the emergency manager. In many communities emergency management is a function within the fire/rescue, public safety, or law enforcement department. Often it is part of a volunteer department. Staff size may run the gamut from a single part-time or shared position, to a full-time employee, to a full-time director with a large staff, each with assigned areas of responsibility. In any community -- no matter what the size -- people look to emergency management for certain things. For example, they expect:

  • A safe and resilient community. In most jurisdictions this entails communitywide preparedness; up-to-date emergency plans, and a training and exercise program to support those plans; and strategies for preventing, protecting against, and mitigating the effects of disasters.
  • Effective response and recovery when incidents do occur.
  • Information about the risks the population faces and the actions they should take.
  • Ethical conduct (FEMA).

"Because the emergency manager takes on a higher profile during emergencies, a common perception is that all emergency management responsibilities are related to responding to emergencies. In reality, emergency management is not just about the core functions involved in response. It includes a broad array of program functions, and much of the work is of a nonemergency nature.   • Warning
  • External affairs/Emergency public information

They wish they were dead, or they feel worthless to the world so they think killing themselves is the solution. What most people don’t understand is that it is a sickness. A virus that takes ahold of your entire being and it is all you can think about. To receive help or treatment is even harder, because then they are admitting they have a problem and they need help. This is the way they rely on getting out their anger or sadness. Tring to stop or not wanting to end your life is just as hard as a drug addict trying to go through rehab. Barnum puts money and success before his family this shows that he wants more, P. T. My Uncertainty with Religion

My knowledge of the bible comes from the sundays I spent at church and the summers I spent at catholic camp. It’s important to mention right off that my parents, if anything, would fit somewhere within the agnostic or atheist categories. We went to a Unitarian Universalist church when I was younger maybe because they wanted me to have a larger world view. As for the catholic camp? That was entirely my own choosing; and all because my best friend went.

Growing up I loved musicals such as Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar. I think we all can agree that the idea of Jesus is nice. He was a man whose philosophy on life was spreading peace and love; and that’s how he lived. As I grew older I began to see a disconnect from Jesus and his teachings and those who called themselves catholics. It is my own belief that the Jesus I grew up getting to know would be disgusted by groups like the Westboro Baptist Church who are infamous for their slogan “God hates fags.” Same-sex marriage has been a defining characteristic in elections over the last few years but we are seeing constant backlash from religious leaders and church groups who claim that homosexuality is a sin. “Sexual issues are tearing our churches apart today as never before. The issue of homosexuality threatens to fracture whole denominations, as the issue of slavery did a hundred and fifty years ago. We naturally turn to the Bible for guidance, and find ourselves mired in interpretative quicksand. Is the Bible able to speak to our confusion on this issue?” (Wink, n.d.).

It has been in my own experience that people are quick to say that yes, the bible does condemn homosexuality but aren’t sure exactly where it says so. I set out to find out exactly what passages are often quoted to use in the argument against same-sex marriage and what scholars have said about them.

“And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’” (Genesis 1:28, English Standard Version).

Therefore, any sexual activity has to lead towards procreation. If that standard is applied widely, lots of people are now in trouble. “This means any postmenopausal women, infertile women, any man or woman who is sterile, pregnant women (she’s not going to get pregnant again), anyone who choses to use birth control...” (Dickens, 2009).

Procreation is dangerous. With the world becoming vastly overpopulated at such a quick rate; 3,000 babies are born worldwide every 20 minutes. (World Population Awareness, 2012). Lets be fruitful and multiply in other ways. Multiply the access to health care, birth control, to education and student loans. Lets advocate for the adoption of children who don’t have homes. We need to let go of the idea of procreation before it’s too late. Clearly, procreation is irrelevant to the world we live in.

“And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.” (Genesis 2:22, English Standard Version). “Then the man said, ‘This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.’” (Genesis 2:23, English Standard Version).

This is what is most commonly used in argument against gay marriage. In this passage, Adam who has become lonely asks God for a companion. God creates all these animals, looking for the right one for Adam. None of them fit, so God takes one of Adam’s ribs and creates Eve to be his “helper.”

The Hebrew phrase ezer kenegdo is often translated to helper when in reality it means corresponding help. “A helper like him, a helper who is a mirror image. A corresponding strength... Someone who mirrors back to the earthling his own humanity. Someone with whom that earthling can feel complete, can feel whole. It doesn’t mean servant, or slave... It is most often used to describe God. God is our helper... My help comes from the Lord.” (Dickens, 2009).

It seems to me that if God wants each of his creations to find their ezer kenegdo, their corresponding helper... And it is the human who chooses who that helper is to be. Why would we ever forbid or restrict gay and lesbians from finding someone who they feel complete with?

Gensis 19:1-29 - Sodom and Gomorrah

“Three angels visited Abraham, God's hand-picked founder of his chosen nation, Israel. They came disguised as men, travelers along the road. Two of them went down to Sodom and Gomorrah, to observe firsthand the wickedness in those cities...” (Zavada, n.d.).

This story is where we get the term sodomy. "...two angels (male) come to Sodom, and Lot, Abraham's nephew, makes them his guests. Later the men of Sodom want to have sex with the guests, but Lot stronger resists this and offers them his two virgin daughters instead” (Oto Via). “Some passages that have been advanced as pertinent to the issue of homosexuality are, in fact, irrelevant. One is the attempted gang rape in Sodom (Gen. 19:1-29). That was a case of ostensibly heterosexual males intent on humiliating strangers by treating them "like women," thus demasculinizing them” (Wink, n.d.). “The two angels, however, struck the men of Sodom blind and rescued Lot, his wife, and his daughters before the Lord rained destruction upon Sodom” (Oto Via). The family is warned to not look back but, of course, the mother does and is turned into a pillar of salt. The rest of the family keeps going and hides up in the mountains. It is then when the two daughters realize that they will not be able to have children because they know what happens to strangers when they enter a new city. “The next day, the firstborn said to the younger, ‘Behold, I lay last night with my father. Let us make him drink wine tonight also. Then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve offspring from our father.’” (Genesis 19:24, English Standard Version).

“Many believe that texts in Genesis and the rest of the Bible make it clear that Sodom was punished because of the violent, abusive, inhospitable, greedy, and unsympathetic behavior of its citizens towards visitors, widows, the poor and other disadvantaged persons. Liberals often interpret Genesis 19 as condemning homosexual rape simply because it is rape.” (Robinson, 2012).

In our society we teach our children “don’t get raped” instead of “don’t rape.” 54% of rapes go unreported and 94% of rapists will never be sent to prison. (RAINN, 2009). Instead of using Sodom and Gomorrah as a story condemning homosexuality, it should be taught as a way to prevent violence and abuse.

“You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination” (Leviticus 18:22, English Standard Version). This passage is part of the Holiness Code and is what people most commonly quote in their argument against same-sex marriage. “The status of women in ancient Hebrew culture was very much lower than that of a man and barely above that of children and slaves. When a man engaged in sexual intercourse with a woman, he always took a dominant position, as a penetrator; the woman would take a submissive posture. When two men engage in sexual intercourse, one of the men, in effect, takes the role of a woman. When a man takes on the low status of a woman, the act makes both ritually impure.” (Robinson, 2009).

In ancient Hebrew culture, when a man married a woman, he owned her. It’s common to hear people say man shall not lie with man but forget the rest of the quote. The passage is saying that it is a sin to own another man as you would own a woman. I am sure that when Peter was writing this, he had no idea that thousands of years from then there would be people of the same gender wanting to be married. Peter’s knowledge of homosexuality was based on the gay (male with male) prostitution that was so common. “This passage does not refer to gay sex generally, but only to a specific form of homosexual prostitution in Pagan temples. Much of Leviticus deals with the Holiness Code which outlined ways in which the ancient Hebrews were to be set apart to God. Some fertility worship practices found in early Pagan cultures were specifically prohibited; ritual same-sex behavior in Pagan temples was one such practice” (Robinson, 2009).

Conclusion

I guess I just don’t understand why all these resources, time and energy is being used in something that isn’t doing one thing to decrease the suffering around the world. I only just began looking at just a few of the stories in the bible used to condemn homosexuality. It looks like to me that these stories are being grossly misused and misunderstood. People have blinders on, where they see and hear what they want to.

There is too much suffering in this world. There is also so much you can take from these biblical stories to go out and decrease that suffering. Instead, people are using them to keep others oppressed. There is no doubt in my mind that this is exactly the opposite of what God and Jesus wanted.

This essay is written in the hopes to challenge the reader's idea of video games and how they affect us as a society and mentally. Video games have exploded in popularity over the years and are only becoming a more common hobby. They are truly everywhere from mobile games people play on the bus to work, learning assisting games to give children a more interactive and fun way to learn all the way up to Esports were people compete in their chosen game in front of hundreds of thousands of people cheering on their favorite player and or team. They have truly become a massive deal in such a short space of time. Naturally, some people will not even have any idea of what video games really are and that a complete lack of knowledge allows for worries, fear, and misinformation to spread. The Research

By using the study on The Royal Society, published on February 13th, 2019 I will be giving research statistics as it spans across not only teenagers who play and don't play but also their parents. This gives the input of the parents seeing changes in their child and the wide number of participants of 1000 teenagers had a mix of girls and boys who both did and didn't play games. It seemed to conclude that video games didn't actually cause violence and any sort of angry outbursts was more linked to competitiveness and or frustration with the game itself. This sort of behavior is seen in a lot of things a good example is people watching football, fans can get so invested they get overwhelmed and can shout in anger or celebration.

The actual science around video games causing violence is very split and seems like people take what they want out of results. Yes to some people getting angry at a game because you lose or someone online is beating you seems weird and scary but to others, it is natural people get competitive naturally and being competitive over digital media isn't all that different from an actual sport or activity. It seems almost impossible to find a definitive answer after researching it but there are still new ways to study it coming out, the best thing to do is to look for yourself and make an informed decision on if they're dangerous.

Games and Ratings

Games are already restricted to a degree. The ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) which started rating video games in around 1994 due to the release of Mortal Kombat 2 as it was added to a list of media content potentially harmful to young children due to its graphic violence. A detailed and well thought out system was put in place where games would be reviewed by a board and they would categories the content. They even differentiated types of violence so cartoon violence and fantasy violence are categorized differently from realistic or gory violence. This creates a meticulous system that doesn't have a theme that's too mature slip into a younger age group. A parent might be okay with their child playing a game with fantasy violence like magical beings fighting with magic but not realistic military violence. The ESRB categorizes this in a way so someone wanting to know what kind of mature like content is in the game allowing for a more informed purchase from just reading the back.

Video Games as Art and Expression

At the end of the day, video games are a form of art and media. They're grand projects constructed by teams of artists, musicians, actors, and writers. Although a common view of games is there's no reason behind them a lot of games have messages and themes behind them and have artistic expression woven into them.

Saving Private Ryan shows the horror of war and has disturbing scenes but its art that showed the horrors of war and how it tried to show just how horrible World War 2 was.

A game known as Spec Ops The Line does something very similar and has a horrifying scene in it were you and your 2 squad mates are trying to reach a gate to escape but there's a small army in the way and one of your squad mates notices a mortar with white phosphorus rounds (A napalm-like weapon that melts skin) you wipe out the army. You then walk through the carnage with soldiers crawling around burning alive and screaming. A soldier then informs you they were actually helping civilians and you then walk through a trench filled with dead civilians to reach a scene of a mother holding her child shielding her child's eyes and they were still burning. It shows the horror of war and also shows how it affects the soldiers who have to fight.

In recent years the use of microtransactions and premium currencies has become popular in the mainstream game market. Heavily influenced by the booming mobile game market they are predatory in nature and prey on people psychologically enticing them to spend more and more. Most prevalent is the use of 'Loot Boxes' which are essentially slot machines were you get random items in the hope you get the items you want creating a situation where people spend more and more to get everything they want. Gambling is a well-known social issue known to affect people mentally. As this is in video games this could be a side argument to the dangers of video games and should be a bigger focus as there is hard evidence on the dangers of gambling.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the debate on 'Do video games cause violence' is a much more complex issue than it seems. Through writing this I have even come to new realizations. I feel as far as evidence of a direct link between games and violence goes it's really not there and most 'Violence' is more competitive aggression which is seen everywhere in society as we are competitive by nature. This I feel doesn't correlate actual violence or violent acts to the playing of computer games. I feel no changes need to be made as there are systems in place to keep inappropriate content out of children and vulnerable people's hands.
