Purpose statement and model
The study purpose to establish the relationship between the performance and salary of MLB players. To come up with the best hypothesis to could be used to investigate the association between salary and performance of the players, we first confirm from the previus researches conducted on the subject. As highlighted by earlier researchers, some of the parameters have to be set which exclude any plaffofs of games. This means that we had to use a standard of 162 games of one season. Since we seek to check the association between salary and performance, the primary dependent variable is taken as salary of players. The dependent variable was chosen because few researchers have attempted to establish the relationship between salary and performance of players of different games in different leagues, and thus, researching on this topic could contribute to better practices in sports. The primary independent variables included On Base percentage (OPS), and experience (EXP), and stolen base (SB). These independent variables were considered because of their weight in influencing salary of the player. For instance, the higher the number of years of experience of a player the higher pay is expected to be receiving. To test the significance of these variables a multiple linear regression model will fitted. The mathematical form is shown below;
y=?0+?1X1+?2X2+?3X3+?Where
y is the salary of employee, and Xs represent the two independent variables.
X1-OPS: On base percentage plus slugging
X2-SB: Stolen base
X3-EXP: Years of experience
Definition of variables
The paper used four variables to determine the association between performance and salary of MLB players. The performance was measured in terms three variables including; On Base percentage (OPS), and experience (EXP), and stolen base (SB). Salary was defined as the gross total of the contractual covenant to pay every baseball player at the end of every year. The data used had player salary dates and amount in US. Dollars for a period of 25 years, nevertheless, in our case we only considered five years time 2014 to 2016. SB is define as the stolen base, it is one of the measure of offensive statistic which entirely depends on individual player. This measure plays a key role in determining salary of the baseball player. We believe that the variable will have a positive relationship with the performance of the player since pivoting and exciting functions are fundamental in the game of baseball. Data of player salay must be obtained. According to a study by Stankiewicz (2009) which examined the relationship between the length of a contract and the productivity of a player, OPS appeared to be the most powerful statistics that determine the productivity or performance of baseball player. The OPS adds these two measures of productivity together, on base percentage and slugging p
